While the Tech job market still appears to be candidate-driven, it is still very important that as an applicant or candidate, you dedicate time to work on the basic things that are crucial to maximise your chances of getting an interview (and hopefully an offer) for that job opportunity that caught your attention! 👀

So here’s some tips which I believe are key steps to help you get there! 👇

1. Tailor your CV/Resume: this is a must. It’s even more important to do so now with the advancement in automation within hiring processes. Some companies might be using AI tools that support the applicants’ qualification process, by screening your CV/Resume for keywords related to the job for example. There’s of course many other reasons, but essentially you want to make sure you read the job description and put the best version of your CV/Resume forward. 💪

By the way , a PDF download of your LinkedIn profile isn’t a CV/Resume, particularly when all it shows is company names and dates (no details on experience). 📄

2. Follow up, be proactive: Here is a good one to help you stand out from the crowd! After submitting your application, it’s a good idea to follow up, for example: some job postings have the name or/and details of the job posting’s owner - drop them a brief LinkedIn message or email asking them to look out for your application. If there’s no contact details on the job posting, it is worth trying an alternative. For instance, companies usually have a “careers@” email alias which you can also use to reach out with a follow up. Even better, check if you know anyone at the company you're applying for and ask for a referral!

Why do it? Firstly there’s really not many candidates who do this (in my experience), sometimes your application might end up in a spam folder/be missed, and other reasons - generally speaking, it tends to work in your favour. 🙌

3. Do your research & show up to your interview prepared: I still find surprising the amount of candidates who come to their interviews unprepared. And by unprepared I mean having no idea what the company does at all and at times also getting the company name completely wrong (even though they applied for the job themselves). I mean…😅

It is also very important to remind yourself that interviewing is a two way process. So make sure to go into the interview process with a clear idea of what you want in your next role ideally, and have at least some deal-breaker questions prepared in relation to the role, logistics etc to help understand if there’s a match.

4. Be yourself, and be honest too: It is totally ok to say “I don’t know” or “I haven’t got experience with x technology or y area”. At the end of the day, you’re going to be assessed on what you and/or your CV/Resume describes as “relevant experience for the job” during the interview process, so it can only be a positive for both sides to be as transparent as possible. Also , just because you have no experience with one or two of the requirements listed on the job description for the role you applied for, it doesn’t mean that you won’t be a good fit! ⚠️ (unless clearly described in the job description as a must have, of course).

Don’t rule yourself out just because you “don’t tick all the boxes”!
