This calculated to a mortality rate of 23.71 per 100,000 population, a rate similar to Switzerland and Mexico, 35% of the UK rate and 60% of the US rate. That rate ranked Canada 17th globally. Across Canada the rate of infection and mortality has varied widely among different provinces, with the largest occurrences being in Ontario and Quebec. A significant contributor to deaths in Canada has been the prevalence of the virus in long-term care facilities, where approximately 80% of the deaths have occurred. In this respect, Canada has a rate more than double the OECD average. Canadians have been reasonably satisfied with their government’s responses to the pandemic. In a June 2020 survey, 59% of Canadian residents felt that the speed of reopening businesses/services in the country was just about right. In a July 2020 report, the OECD said that the COVID-19 pandemic triggered a deep economic crisis not seen since the Great Depression.
