How do you network and advocate for underrepresented professionals?
Don’t be shy about your achievements. Use social media to highlight your milestones, especially LinkedIn. In my experience, I’ve noticed that professionals particularly from underrepresented ethnicities are more likely to underplay their achievements due to the fear of being seen as boastful. We put a lot of value on humility, but that's not the most helpful especially when it comes to getting recognition for the work. Let’s change that narrative; your accomplishments deserve to be celebrated. If you don't, I can almost guarantee that other people who may not even be delivering as much as you, will.

How do you network and advocate for underrepresented professionals?
I don't think I could recommend networks and forums more. Both internal and external networks have provided me with different avenues for community. Networks like BYP (Black Young Professionals), Women Who Code, and other industry groups often hold seminars, workshops, and other events that help build your skill set and offer valuable networking opportunities. For me personally, I’ve found groups like BYP, Colorintech, Black Girls in Tech, CodingBlackFemales and others geared towards Black professionals in tech to be a treasure trove of opportunities and like-minded individuals not just as a recipient, but also in my role as a DEI Lead.

How do you network and advocate for underrepresented professionals?
Early in my career, having clear goals and clarity of my own values helped guide my networking efforts. Knowing my own intentions helped me align with peers and managers who shared similar values, especially when it came to who was getting which opportunities. One common piece of advice I hear is “network with as many people as you can,” but I actually disagree with this. Networking is not just about quantity; it's about the quality of relationships. Always network with a purpose that aligns with your core values. It's not about how many connections you can get on LinkedIn but how those connections actually can be nurtured in ways that will have meaningful outcomes.
