    We Are Wimbledon Fund

    AFC Wimbledon

    - Present 11 years 8 months

AFC Wimbledon is an inspiration to fans of other clubs. Created from the ashes of Wimbledon FC it is Fan owned and run by a small paid team and numerous volunteers. As the club rises back up through the leagues it has become difficult to continuously compete on the pitch due to a relatively low playing budget and the constraints of a small stadium that is regularly full to capacity. It is with this in mind that the We Are Wimbledon Fund was launched. Monies raised, mainly by supporter direct debits, go directly to increasing the playing budget. I helped to get the fund off the ground and it has made a major difference to the budget and to the quality of player we have been able to sign.

Despite the pandemic in 2020, The British Citizen Award continued to recognise and Honour individuals from around the UK that are making a difference in their communities and society. The July 2021 Medalists were presented today with their BCA Medal and Certificate of Honour at a prestigious event at the Palace of Westminster. Xavier Wiggins, Craig Wellstead and Cormac van der Hoeven from London are 3 of 26 Medalists and have been recognised for Services to the Community with a BCAc.

The British Citizen Award, in partnership with One Stop, is now in its sixth year and recognises exceptional individuals who positively impact their communities throughout the country.

Xavier, Craig and Cormac were presented with their Medals of Honour from Founder of long-term Sponsors Objective HR, Lisa Collins.

In March 2020 in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, Xavier, Craig & Cormac created ‘Dons Local Action Group’ (DLAG) to support local communities and to fight poverty and isolation in the London boroughs of Merton, Wandsworth and Kingston. Their drive generated a major awakening in the local community mobilising an army of volunteers - over 2,000 - and bringing councils, MP’s and local businesses on board.

They started with one trestle table, collecting food donations outside a local supermarket. Their initial aim was to help vulnerable and isolated people by delivering food parcels. As AFC Wimbledon fans, they reached out to the club’s fans to help them and worked collaboratively with volunteers from local organisations. They added more collection points outside more locations and recruited additional volunteers, setting up a network of delivery drivers and liaised with local charities, councils, MP’s and schools providing food for 3.5 million meals.
