When fictional football manager Ted Lasso appeared in FIFA23, many wondered how the collaboration came to be. In their talk, "How the **** did that happen?" at D&AD Festival 2024 , EA Sports FC's Ben Prout (Head of Creative) and Kevin Strunk (Director, Brand Marketing) explained it all in conversation with Malcolm Poynton (Global CCO, Cheil) — from creating a 10-slide deck to wearing visors and fake moustaches at the pitch. "I wish we had a photo of this," said Strunk. "You talk about selling an idea... we were in it." The music video for the track ‘Mama’s Eyes’ chronicles the origins of singer Mette’s emergence as a performer, musician, and dancer, becoming increasingly personal as the song progresses. Created by DIVISION, Love Song US, and Trim Editing, the video was also a hit at D&AD Awards 2024, winning Yellow Pencils in Editing and Direction. It also won a Yellow Pencil in the Music Videos category, along with a Wood Pencil. “The direction is exceptional, but the edit is what really pushed it over the edge,” commented Sue Yeon Ahn, Managing Director at SMUGGLER. Here, she tells us more about the video's narrative and why it stood out in the Music Videos category during this year’s judging. Soon after the war in Ukraine began, nearly 10 million refugees crossed into Poland, seeking refuge in major cities. To assist them, Mastercard and McCANN Poland launched 'Where to Settle', a smart-data platform that aggregates various data points to provide personalised recommendations, helping up to 20% of Ukrainians find opportunities across Poland. Led by McCann Poland, the work picked up a rare Black Pencil in Experiential at D&AD Awards 2024, along with Wood Pencils in Digital & Social, Direct, and PR, and an additional Graphite Pencil in Direct. ASHLEY RUDDER, CCO at Deutsch NY and one of the Jury Presidents explains why 'Where to Settle' was so highly awarded. "Mastercard really showed up here," she says. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are savvy about royalties and co-creation in the fashion and gaming spaces, said LEANNE ELLIOTT-YOUNG (CEO, Institute of Digital Fashion), at D&AD Festival 2024. With a no-frills approach, a solo winemaker from rural Ontario turned his garage into a base for wine brand Garage Wine. His down-to-earth methods and cluttered workspace served as inspiration, and Leo Burnett Canada helped the brand stand out as a refreshingly honest story in the often pretentious world of wine.
