We were thrilled to welcome Chris Allan, Vice President of Fan Strategy and Experience at Inter Miami CF, to the University of East London! ⚽ A proud alumnus, Chris graduated in 2010 with a degree in Film Studies and has since soared to incredible heights in the sports industry, working closely with global icons David Beckham and Lionel Messi. We were delighted to be joined by Camila Jocelyn-Holt, Director of Community Engagement at Inter Miami CF. During his whistlestop visit, Chris met with Professor Paul Marshall, Vice President Global Campus & Pro-Vice-Chancellor Careers & Enterprise, and other key members of the UEL directorate, sharing insights from his remarkable journey. He also took time to engage with our students, including MBA Sports Journalism student Gregg Baxter and Film students Brian Edmond and Xavier Edwards. Chris spoke warmly about his time at UEL, crediting his experience here with laying the foundation for his successful career. It was inspiring to see how UEL played a part in shaping Chris’s path, and we’re proud to have been a part of his journey. His visit was a reminder of the incredible potential within our community. On 24 and 25 August, UEL is hosting the riveting performance art piece Thaw, part of the Greenwich + Docklands International Festival. Come down to our Docklands Campus and see a two-and-a-half tonne block of ice dangling over the Thames, with performers from Australian theatre company Legs on the Wall moving precariously atop it to the strains of meditative music. It’s a powerful statement on climate change, developed in response to Australia’s devastating bushfires of 2019/20. Legs on the Wall artistic director Joshua Thompson said, “I made this show in a moment where I wanted to do something positive, bring attention to the global conversation of the environment, climate change. I think the biggest thing is that this show is the starting point of imagining another future. I really believe in creativity being a key part of the answers that we need to find. The core of the concept is really that it’s everyone up on that ice, that ice is our planet, and we have to find a better way of working with it.” Performing at UEL is special, he said, adding, “Being in a university space where sustainability is key, where there are programmes and people are thinking about it, our work sits really lovely here. “And being over the Thames is massive, because the Thames has been a space where industry has come from, a birthplace of the journey that we've been on so far. It feels very special, the connection between that and the future, and the innovation needed for the climate discussion to be shifted and changed.” UEL is dedicated to tackling the global climate crisis through research, course curriculum and innovative projects and initiatives, with priorities that align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. The University seeks to create sustainable communities, fight climate change, reduce inequality and transform health and sustainable wellbeing, and has reduced its CO2 emissions more than any other modern university in London, with a goal of net zero carbon campuses by 2030. The Greenwich + Docklands International Festival runs through 8 September and offers more than 50 free events, including theatre, circus, dance and performance art across Greenwich, Newham and the City of London.
