For those diagnosed with rare or chronic diseases, it can be difficult to navigate complex medical jargon to learn what's actually going on. Medical Art student Leah O'Donnell has first-hand experience of this. After being diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a rare form of liver disease, she has used her experience to help shape her Masters Show project and create a medical animation designed to support children through their diagnosis. Our researchers are building an artificial intelligence (AI) tool which aims to spot early signs of dementia. 🧠 We have partnered with The University of Edinburgh to create the software tool, which will use AI to analyse brain scans from the entire Scottish population to find patterns that could indicate a person’s risk of developing dementia. Professor Emanuele Trucco, an AI and medical imaging expert in our School of Science and Engineering, is co-leading the initiative. Take a trip to Poland in the 1990s. 👇 Animation & VFX student Justyna Butkiewicz invites you into her Polish granny’s home, but you don't have to time travel - she has meticulously used family photographs and videos to create a 3D visualisation of the space she grew up in as a child, before emigrating to Scotland. Picture this: you've just witnessed a crime and the police ask you to draw a picture of the suspect. How confident would you be in your artistic ability? A forensic artist from the University has found that having witnesses sketch a picture of the suspect - no matter how good (or bad!) their drawing skills are - can help in the identification process. https://buff.ly/46Vk51A

New research shows that people who have faced traumatic or stressful events during childhood have a higher risk of experiencing multiple long-term health conditions in adulthood. A team in the University’s School of Medicine, led by Dr Dhan Senaratne, conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 25 studies involving over 370,000 people to reveal that each additional traumatic or stressful event experienced during childhood increases the odds of an individual suffering from multiple chronic conditions later in life by nearly 13%.
