Today marks a significant milestone as we celebrate the origins of Inmarsat Maritime, which was established an intergovernmental organization on July 16, 1979. 🎉 This date also commemorates the introduction of the IMSO convention, a pivotal framework that ensures the provision of satellite-based maritime distress communication services integral to the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). Since its inception, Inmarsat Maritime, in collaboration with the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO), has been dedicated to the safety of seafarers worldwide, providing around-the-clock support to ensure that every vessel at sea remains connected to shore, equipped with the up-to-date safety information. As we honour this legacy of lifesaving innovation, we continue our journey as part of Viasat, ensuring that we keep seafarers safe wherever they are. As IMSO celebrates 45 years, we're also celebrating 25 years as a commercial company, and this is not just a time to look back at our achievements, it's also about looking forward to new opportunities and advancements under the Viasat umbrella. Here's to continuing our mission of saving lives at sea with even greater impact. And happy anniversary IMSO.

IACS now requires all new build vessels and their connected systems to meet certain minimum cyber-resilience standards stipulated by URs E26 and E27. Our new white paper highlights that the implementation of these standards will provide a comprehensive overview of a vessel's computer assets and network infrastructure but it also uncovered some limitations of the URs and the need to go beyond compliance. Our new Future of Maritime Safety Report is out now and shows a 7.6% decrease in GMDSS distress since 2023. Although this is progress, numbers remain too close to the six-year average of 799 calls per year. The report highlights the critical role of technology in supporting efforts to improve safety through better data analysis and sharing. For our research report, 'The Digital Wave', we surveyed seafarers and found that on average, they are relying on digital tools for around five hours per day. Naturally, their internet access is used for both work and leisure. When at work, seafarers use connectivity to gain insight into ship performance, improve operational efficiency and enhance safety. This article explores how crews are increasingly relying on data and connectivity to complete their daily tasks and make better decisions for safety and efficiency, and delves into how new connected digital technologies are enabling vessels to operate more and more like floating homes and offices.
