From a public engagement event in Hastings - East Sussex with Sussex Police to Paternoster Square - City of London with City of London Police. Our RAPID Bleed Control Kits have had some excellent exposure, and it’s been great to explain and show how they work to members of the public. ************************************************** Knife crime, Gun crime, Terrorism, Accidents at work and Road Traffic Collisions are all situations where a person can sustain a Catastrophic Bleed. CHEST SEALS - SEAL IT! There were approximately 50,510 offenses involving a sharp instrument (excluding Devon & Cornwall) in England and Wales. Which sadly represents a 4% increase compared to the previous year (2023/24). With current events, especially in the UK we thought a little education on how to apply a chest seal (or improvised product) could go a long way. Whilst the application of chest seals for the majority don't require any prompts, guidance or stepwise learning, our SEAL method is widely used for educational purposes. S: Strip Away Remove any clothing, or materials (such as body armour if safe to-do so). If the patient has a sharp object still embedded in their chest/back then leave it alone. Removing it could cause further problems. E: Expose the Injury (All injuries) Situation dependant, you might have to clean/wipe away and fluids and dirt from the wound site. Failing to-do this could hinder the seal of the chest seal dressing. A: Apply The Chest Seal Dressing Chest seals with a valve are the gold standard, however an occlusive chest seal (no valve) will still be extremely useful. Apply the centre of the chest seal over the centre of the wound. If you have multiple wounds and only one chest seal then cover the largest injury as a priority. The bigger the hole, the more air it sucks in. Lastly.. L: Lay Uppermost Depending on the patients condition and the situation, lay the patient on their side with the injury uppermost. It's easier to observe for obstructions and easier to manage.
