Marvel Studios

Marvel Studios is an American film and television studio responsible for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which spans over 30 movies and over a dozen series and counting. The studio originated as Marvel Films in December 1994 before relaunching as Marvel Studios in August 1996. It became a global powerhouse when it became a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios following Disney’s purchase of the studio in December 2009 for $4 billion. The MCU had already started on the big screen at this time through Marvel’s theatrical deal with Paramount, which released films such as “Iron Man” (2008), “The Incredible Hulk” (2008), “Iron Man 2” (2010), “Thor” (2011) and “Captain America: The First Avenger” (2011). Starting with 2012’s “The Avengers,” Disney became the sole distributor of the MCU. That film, directed by Joss Whedon, grossed $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office. Several Marvel Studios movies have crossed the billion dollar mark at the worldwide box office, most notably “Avengers: Endgame.” The 2019’s tentpole’s opening weekend gross of $357 million is the biggest domestic opening in box office history. 

Starting in 2021, Marvel Studios brought the MCU to streaming via Disney+ with the launch of “WandaVision.” The series earned critical acclaim and garnered 23 Primetime Emmy nominations and three wins. Additional Marvel series include “Ms. Marvel,” “She-Hulk,” “Hawkeye” and “Loki.” Films such as “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), “Captain America: Civil War” (2016), “Black Panther” (2018), “Avengers: Infinity War” (2018), “Captain Marvel” (2019), “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019) and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021) are among the 50 highest-grossing films of all time worldwide. Collectively, the MCU has earned over $29 billion worldwide.
