About us
In 1994, Candia Atwater founded the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts, Inc. (CMCArts) in response to rising youth violence on St. Croix. Her mission was clear: to provide a haven for positive expression through art. At the time, Ms. Atwater, a dedicated prosecutor handling Family Court cases for the Department of Justice and an avid collector of Caribbean art, recognized the urgent need for a dedicated space where both children and the broader island community could engage in and appreciate diverse forms of art. To address this need, she initiated a comprehensive arts program with a strong focus on the island's youth. Over time, this program has grown into a cherished annual tradition. As part of CMCArts' offerings, Ms. Atwater introduced the beloved "ISLAND ART & SOUL" calendar, spotlighting Caribbean artists and their remarkable work. Since 2003, CMCArts has made its permanent home in a historic building on Strand Street in Frederiksted. This architectural gem, dating back to the 1780s, proudly serves as the sole Museum Center in the Virgin Islands, nestled serenely on the picturesque waterfront of Frederiksted, St. Croix. Within these walls, we curate captivating exhibitions and offer classes suitable for both the young and the young at heart. Our building not only houses local artistry but also provides space for curated exhibitions, two Artists in Residence apartments, and a vibrant courtyard teeming with creative energy. With its adaptable spaces, CMCArts is an ideal venue for various celebratory events. As we continue to evolve, our commitment to nurturing creativity, providing a platform for Caribbean artists, and fostering the free expression of art remains unwavering. The Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts (CMCArts) in Frederiksted, St. Croix, is thrilled to announce the upcoming residency of DuPont Brass, a dynamic brass-driven supergroup hailing from Washington, DC. This exciting collaboration is set to take place in February 2024 as part of CMCArts' commitment to enriching the cultural landscape and providing impactful arts education to the local community. DuPont Brass, originally formed by five music majors from Howard University, has evolved into a 9-piece ensemble that seamlessly blends brass, a rhythm section, and vocalists. With a unique sound they term "Eclectic Soul," incorporating elements of jazz, hip-hop, and R&B, DuPont Brass brings a diverse musical experience to their audiences. As part of their engagement with CMCArts, DuPont Brass will conduct educational workshops, imparting the fundamentals of brass playing to students. This initiative aligns perfectly with CMCArts' mission to deliver high-quality arts education programming to middle and high school students while fostering meaningful connections with artists and educators. The residency culminates in a series of concerts that celebrate the rich connections between the jazz tradition and the vibrant music of the Caribbean region. This program not only contributes to CMCArts' social and artistic goals but also serves as a model for future cultural exchanges between the US Virgin Islands and the Washington, DC region. We are honored to host DuPont Brass as part of our Mid Atlantic Tours program, providing a unique opportunity for our community to engage with world-class musicians and broaden their musical horizons.
