Description

The project works to improve equitable access to gender-sensitive and nutritious food for populations from ten of the poorest villages in the Minya Governorate affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Project activities include: (1) reducing COVID-19 related barriers to carrying out smallholder horticultural production and agro-food processing activities and enhancing food system resilience during the COVID-19 crisis, as well as present environmental and future climate change challenges; (2) providing rural women of different ages and socio-economic groups, as well as their households and communities, with improved access to efficient climate-smart agriculture practices and technologies; and (3) providing technical and financial support for the establishment or strengthening of agri-food enterprises in the horticulture value chain.

Expected results

The expected outcomes of this project include: (1) improved equitable access to nutritious food for populations affected by COVID-19, particularly for rural women and youth in Minya Governorate; (2) reduced barriers to agricultural production and agro-processing activities caused by COVID-19, particularly for rural women and youth in Minya Governorate; and (3) strengthened resilience of the food system to the current and future environmental challenges of climate change.

Results achieved

The results achieved as of March 2022 include: (1) selected ten villages in four districts, Maghagha, El-Edwa, Abou-Korkas, and Malawi, to receive improved economic, food security and nutrition support; (2) identified, selected and trained 20 master trainers and 40 facilitators from local communities and universities in preparation for conducting field operations; (3) selected 11 local-service providers; (4) pre-selected 2,000 beneficiaries to create 40 Farmer Field Schools and Farmer Business Schools in their respective villages, establish a community kitchen, and support the establishment of at least four agribusinesses; and (5) launched 20 nutrition awareness campaigns to disseminate key messages on food security and nutrition across the targeted villages.
