Description

This project aims to improve sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for vulnerable adolescent girls and boys through an adolescent-friendly approach focused on preventing and reducing unwanted pregnancies, HIV/AIDS and sexual and gender-based violence. Project activities include: (1) strengthening SRHR healthcare services through capacity development of health networks; (2) mobilizing adolescent groups and organizations to improve their awareness and capacity to engage on SRHR issues; and (3) improving the policy and operational environment at subnational levels for preventing unwanted pregnancies, HIV/AIDS and sexual and gender-based violence. The initiative is implemented by UNICEF, as part of their Bolivia country program, in collaboration with Save the Children.

Expected results

The expected outcomes for this project include: (1) improved quality of adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services for the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) and HIV/AIDS, ensuring services are gender and culturally sensitive and adolescent-friendly; (2) enhanced decision-making power and gender equality among vulnerable youth and adolescent girls and boys to prevent unwanted pregnancies, SGBV and HIV/AIDS; and (3) strengthened enabling environment for vulnerable youth and adolescent girls and boys to meaningfully exercise their rights to gender equality and SRHR.

Results achieved

Results achieved as of the end of the project (March 2023) include: (1) five supported health networks offer gender-sensitive and adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health services, serving more than 105,000 adolescents; (2) trained over 1,300 healthcare providers on gender equality, and gender-sensitive and adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health services and counselling; (3) provided 151 healthcare facilities with basic equipment for gender-sensitive and adolescent-friendly sexual and reproductive health care in target locations; (4) provided over 750 adolescents with access to SRH services, including modern methods of contraception; and (5) reached an estimated 1,500 direct adolescent beneficiaries and 15,000 mothers, fathers, and caregivers beneficiaries.
