Here's how last month was Atlanta's second hottest June on record

In total, we had 18 days at or above 90 degrees at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport

ATLANTA — It's official. June 2024 will go down as Atlanta's second-hottest June on record.

Atlanta's average temperature for the month was 81.5 degrees, factoring in the high and low temperatures. The hottest June on record was in 1952, with an average temperature of 82.3 degrees. Atlanta's record-keeping goes back to 1879.

We had 18 days at or above 90 degrees in the month. This is nearly double the 'normal' number of 90-degree days Atlanta has based on the "climate" average, which is 10. We also had an incredible nine days that hit at least 95 degrees in the month.

Our hottest day was 100 degrees, which tied the June 26 daily record high from over a century ago in 1914!

The month ended with an average high temperature of 91.1 degrees, which was the ninth hottest for highs.

Based on 1991 to 2020 climate data, Atlanta's average "high" temperature for June is 87.1 degrees.

It was not only a hot month but also a dry month. Atlanta received just 1.74 inches of rain, which fell 2.8 inches short of our average of 4.54 inches for June.

With the abnormally hot and dry month, a flash drought developed across parts of the metro area.

Part of Fulton, Cobb, Clayton, Douglas, Paulding, Coweta, Cherokee, Carroll, Fayette, Henry, Spalding, Pike, Lamar, Upson, Butts, Jasper, and Putnam counties are now experiencing moderate drought conditions as of last Thursday, June 27. The next drought monitor, based on data from Tuesday, July 2, will be released on Thursday, July 4.

July also looks to stay hotter than normal. Here's the July temperature outlook from the Climate Prediction Center, released June 30th. They show much greater-than-average chances of above-normal temperatures.

In other words, it's going to stay hot this month!
