Hurricane Beryl now a Category 2 hurricane, making landfall in Mexico this morning

Beryl heads towards northeast Mexico & southern Texas late weekend

NORFOLK, Va. —

Hurricane Beryl

The weakening of Hurricane Beryl over the last couple of days reversed itself Thursday evening, and Beryl is upgraded to a major hurricane of Category 3 strength, with maximum sustained winds of 115 mph and gusts up to 140 mph.

As of Friday morning, Beryl was then again downgraded to a category 2 hurricane as it made landfall into Mexico's Yucatán peninsula.

Beryl will emerge back into the Gulf of Mexico where it will likely re-strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane. Some models are suggesting it could take a jog up toward the north, so Texas should keep an eye on this over the next couple of days.

Forecast track for Hurricane Beryl.

Beryl is expected to re-strengthen back into a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 80 mph once it crosses the Yucatan Peninsula and moves back into the Gulf of Mexico. There is a high-pressure system over the southeast which is helping steer Beryl towards the south. But, over the next couple of days, this high-pressure system could move further east, allowing for a more northerly track. It's looking like Beryl could either make landfall in Mexico in the same area as Alberto, or it could make landfall in southern Texas.

Beyond Beryl, there most likely won't be much in the way of development for at least a week or so due to an influx in Saharan dust entering over the Atlantic, making it much harder for tropical development.

We are keeping close tabs on all the developments in the tropics, so continue to check back with us on 13News Now for updates.
