ATLANTA — Morehouse College announced on Friday that its current president will retire next year.
The college recognized David Thomas for his achievements as the university's president since January 2018. He is the institution's 12th president.
His last day as president will be on June 30, 2025.
"Serving as president of Morehouse has been the honor of a lifetime. The best moment for a leadership transition is when an institution is strong, and the building blocks are in place to achieve its vision," Thomas said in a letter to the students and staff. "I believe that time is now, and new leadership can bring fresh eyes, energy, and perspective to address challenges and discover new opportunities."
The announcement comes after Morehouse College leaders came under fire for their choice to have President Joe Biden as the 2024 commencement speaker. Students argued that Biden's arrival on the college's campus appeared to be a campaign stunt to help gain more Black voters. Biden also came at a time when colleges and universities around the country were protesting the war in Gaza.
Morehouse College added that Thomas had achieved "impactful work" during his tenure.
Officials added that during his time at the college, the institution received the most funds it has raised in Morehouse's history.
A news release stated, "With over 30 years in higher education informing his vision, Dr. Thomas's time in office has positioned Morehouse to exert even more profound influence in the 21st Century."
The release added that since Thomas took office, the university has seen upgrades in infrastructure. The college also added that employees are being paid more competitively.
Morehouse has also added an online undergraduate degree completion program, leadership in virtual reality and more.
Although he will retire as president, his time at Morehouse will continue for a while. Officials added that Thomas will join the faculty and aid in the completion of the a $500 million capital campaign.
The institution is now searching for its 13th president.
Thomas added in his letter, "I will forever remain committed to supporting Morehouse in its pursuit of excellence and delivering on its mission. I look forward to the upcoming school year and making it the best of my tenure."
