Entire temple of Buddhist monks dismissed after testing positive to meth

An entire temple of Buddhist monks have been dismissed from their posting in Thailand after they all tested positive to methamphetamine.
The monks were removed from the temple in the northern Thai province of Phetchabun by police on Monday before being taken to rehab, a local official told news agency AFP.
All four inhabitants of the temple, including the abbot, tested positive for the drug after failing a urine test.

It's not known what prompted police to attend the temple but the raid comes amid a national crackdown on drug use.
Thailand is currently in the midst of a meth crisis, with seizures of the drug reaching an all-time high in 2021, according to the UN's Office on Drugs and Crime.
Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha last month declared war against the drug after a former police officer, who was facing methamphetamine possession charges, killed 37 people during a shooting at a daycare.

The country is a major transit point for methamphetamine, with the drugs flooding into the country from Myanmar - the world's biggest producer of meth - via Laos.
They are typically sold in pill form, which cost as little as $1.
