A NSW community battered by natural disasters has been left frustrated by a long-standing sinkhole in the middle of a road.

Repair works, which are estimated to cost millions, have begun but not expected to be completed until July 12.
The road has been shut since, as wet weather continues to hinder progress.
Thousands of residents have been forced to take detours, adding at least 20 minutes to their daily commutes.
The road connects the community to town centres, where there are supermarkets and pharmacies.

A sinkhole on central Auckland's College Hill was caused by an old stormwater pipe due for renewal next month, Auckland Council has said.
Roads surrounding a growing sinkhole outside Auckland's police headquarters were closed on Tuesday morning, allowing council staff to assess the large hole.

Just next to the hole is a covered-up hole that was formed during the Auckland Anniversary weekend flooding in January, which locals say has never been repaired.
