Vasiliy Lomachenko (17-3, 11 KOs) and George Kambosos Jr. (21-2, 10 KOs) are doing battle for the vacant IBF lightweight championship in Australia, and it airs live on Saturday night on ESPN and ESPN+.

It’s a well-made fight on paper, but it’s one in which we all have the inclination to where this is going, even though it really shouldn’t be that simple given that there’s a vacant title on the line.

Lomachenko vs. Kambosos Breakdown

Lomachenko is one of the best all-around boxers of the last decade-plus and is still on many pound-for-pound lists because of his resume, which includes titles at featherweight, super featherweight and lightweight.

Loma has won five world titles across the three weight classes, and he was a unified champion at lightweight.

We haven’t seen him since a year ago, when he lost a controversial unanimous decision to Devin Haney for Haney’s undisputed lightweight championship.

Lomachenko was once as dominant as anyone in the sport. However, he’s 3-2 going back to 2020, and now at 36, it appears that he’s past his athletic peak, though he’s still a world-class competitor and a big favorite on Saturday.

Kambosos, 30, is coming off a controversial decision win over Maxi Hughes in July 2023, when he won the vacant IBO lightweight title, which isn’t considered one of the major four world title organizations in boxing.

That followed back-to-back wide decision losses to Haney in Australia during 2022 to unify all the major lightweight titles.

Kambosos had three of the four major titles after pulling off a stunning upset over Teofimo Lopez – who beat Lomachenko in 2020 – in Lopez’s very next fight in 2021.

As written before, it was a stupid-ass game plan from Lopez, who was overly emotional on fight night, tried to go for the knockout all evening, had no respect for Kambosos as a live underdog, and was even dropped en route to a close, upset split decision.

It’s the fight that put Kambosos on the map, and it uniquely capped off a streak of three consecutive split decision wins over fellow contenders Lee Selby and Mickey Bey.

Kambosos has had an odd career, in short, and this fight shapes up as another huge payday.

At 5-foot-9 and with a 68-inch reach, Kambosos will also present a size advantage over the 5-foot-7, 66-inch reach Lomachenko, who has stopped only one opponent in the last five years.

Kambosos is more live than he may appear simply because Lomachenko has shown signs of slowing down, but I can’t get to him winning.

Even last year against Haney, you still see Lomachenko put on world-class efforts against elite opposition, and many believed he won that fight.

The odds aren’t awesome, but I’ll take Lomachenko by decision in Kambosos' Australia backyard, at -162 on FanDuel.

It may appear risky on the surface, but Loma is the A-side and is just much better. Kambsos has been dropped before but never stopped, is tough as hell, if nothing else, and Lomachenko isn’t a finisher anymore, it appears.

And I can't, in good conscience, pick Kambosos to win after being blown out by Haney and then losing to Hughes – just not to the judges.
