We’ve reached the midpoint of the 2024 MLB season, so now’s as good a time as any to check in on each league’s Cy Young race.

In the American League, Corbin Burnes is the only pitcher that was a top-five favorite in Spring Training who currently ranks in the top 10. Gerrit Cole (+500) entered the year favored to win his second straight Cy Young but missed nearly the first three months of the season rehabbing an elbow injury. Meanwhile, Kevin Gausman — who had the second-best odds (+700) — has been a disaster. Burnes, Pablo López and Framber Valdez were all listed at +1000 to round out the top five, but the latter two have disappointed as well.

Meanwhile, Burnes is the current leader in the clubhouse at +200. He won the award in the NL in 2021 and is looking to become the eighth pitcher to win it in both leagues, joining Gaylord Perry, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens, Roy Halladay, Max Scherzer and Blake Snell. Burnes is 9-3 in his first season in Baltimore with a 2.32 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 105 strikeouts.

He’s in a battle with Tarik Skubal, whose odds are only a hair behind him at +220. The Tigers ace missed most of last season but is dominating this year. He has an identical 9-3 record with 119 punchouts, which ranks seventh in MLB. He’s also tied for the fourth-best WHIP (0.93) and has the fifth-best ERA (2.45). Skubal had the eight-best odds to win the Cy Young during Spring Training (+2200).

The pitcher with the third-best odds at the midpoint is Garrett Crochet, who has come out of nowhere to emerge as a true ace for the White Sox. Crochet leads the majors in strikeouts (141) and ranks third in WHIP (0.93) to go along with a 3.02 ERA and 6-6 record.

In the National League, Atlanta's Spencer Strider (+550) was favored heading into the season. However, he made only two starts this season before suffering a UCL sprain in his right elbow. He reportedly won’t be back on the mound until early next season at best.

The pitcher with the second-best odds entering the year was Zack Wheeler (+850), and he’s currently favored to win his first Cy Young (+180). Wheeler is 9-4 on the year with a 2.74 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 119 strikeouts.

Right behind him is Chris Sale (+270), who is enjoying a renaissance with the Braves after several injury-plagued campaigns with the Red Sox. He's tied for the best record in baseball (11-3) and has the best WHIP (0.91) of any pitcher. Sale also ranks fourth in strikeouts (127) and eighth in ERA (2.71) as he aims for his first Cy Young.

Meanwhile, Tyler Glasnow is another pitcher with a history of injuries who made the switch to the National League this year.  He ranks third in the NL Cy Young race at +700. Glasnow has been phenomenal for the Dodgers, ranking second in all of baseball in strikeouts (136) and is tied with Skubal for the fourth-best WHIP (0.93). He’s also 8-5 with a 3.23 ERA.
