The San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees will put their series to a close Sunday, with a pair of southpaws on the mound. The unconventional Nestor Cortes Jr. will face the strikeout-machine Blake Snell in the Sunday series finale from Oracle Park on Lou Gehrig Day.

San Francisco Giants

It was a strange offseason for Snell, so his early-season struggles don’t come as a huge surprise. He cruised to one of the most dominant second halves ever for a pitcher last season, which typically leads to a lucrative, long-term deal. Instead, Scott Boras waited things out and Snell ended up signing a two-year deal with the Giants. The quick ramp-up time and injuries have led to a 10.42 ERA for Snell through five starts.

However, his 4.55 FIP and 3.97 xFIP should provide Giants fans with some optimism that he will turn his first season in the Bay Area around.

Dating to May 15, the Giants boast the fourth-best wRC+ in baseball at 121, behind the Yankees, Royals and Cardinals. The past four games have gone differently, though. The Giants scored one run in two of the four, two runs in one and came up short against the Yankees in the fourth.

Facing a lefty puts the Giants in a tougher position since its best hitter according to wRC+, LaMonte Wade Jr., doesn’t play against southpaws. Wilmer Flores could be the Giants' X-Factor as Wade’s replacement in the lineup. He’s hitting just .216 this year despite being one of the Giants' most reliable hitters last year.

The Yankees' dominance has continued with a pair of wins over the Giants, and they are now one win away from securing the sweep in San Francisco. Jordan Hicks and Logan Webb struggled against the Yankees' lineup, which ranks first in MLB with a 122 wRC+. New York finally surpassed the Dodgers this week for the first time, to go along with the lowest ERA in baseball.

It’s pretty uncommon to have the best pitching staff and lineup in baseball, but it shows this Yankees team is different than the past few years.

What can I say about Aaron Judge that hasn’t been said? Well, he’s probably the best hitter in baseball right now. The 6'7" Yankees captain collected his league-leading 21st home run in Saturday’s game against the Giants. But Snell has been kryptonite for Judge over the years, holding the slugger to 1-for-16 in their career battles.

Plus, the Yankees pose the ideal plan for getting to Snell. He hasn’t recorded more than 14 outs in any start because of his high-strikeout, high-walk profile. That’s a problem since the Bronx Bombers combat that with the fifth-lowest strikeout rate in MLB and a very strong walk rate. It could be an early bullpen game for the Giants.

On the mound is Cortes, who will look to continue his strong start to the year, posting a 3.30 ERA in 67.1 innings, including a stretch of only two earned runs in his past 17.1 innings. He’s arguably the “weak link” of the Yankees' dominant rotation, and he’d serve as the second- or third-best pitcher for a majority of teams. The Yankees' rotation is unbelievably strong, and Cortes should provide some length Sunday.

Betting Pick & Prediction

I love the Yankees in this spot, as fading Snell until he gives me a reason to back him is my plan of attack. He could pitch well against some teams, but I don’t see it coming against the Yankees on Sunday. He’ll dish out a handful of walks and struggle putting hitters away.

I’m comfortable laying -170 juice at most, but I don’t hate taking plus money on Yankees -1.5 run line either. It feels like more of a convincing win, than a nail-biting wire-to-wire showdown.

Pick: Yankees Moneyline (-142 via DraftKings | Play to -170)
