French Open Open Odds, Picks

Marketa Vondrousova (-650) vs Rebeka Masarova (+400)

5 a.m. ET

Marketa Vondrousova most recently competed in Strasbourg (clay), falling in the quarterfinals 7-5, 3-6, 2-6 to Anhelina Kalinina. Vondrousova won just 46% of her service points, including 12 double faults, getting broken eight times. On return, the Czech won 45% of her return points, breaking on six occasions.

Vondrousova, a former Roland Garros finalist, is an incredible 100-36 as a professional on clay. The Czech is 6-4 this season on the dirt. Vondrousova controls the baseline with her heavy, lefty forehand. She constructs points effectively, largely keeping the ball on her forehand and dragging her opponents around the court. While Vondrousova's backhand, while weaker, still showcases strong placement. And the 24 year old has excellent variety, changing the pace of rallies with drop shots, angles and slices. Vondrousova defends and counterpunches successfully, but she is a bit underpowered.

Rebeka Masarova last competed in a $100k clay event in Madrid, making the semifinals, before retiring injured down 1-3 to Leyre Romero Gormaz. However, Masarova had beaten a strong competitor in World No. 113 Anna Bondar to reach the semifinals.

Masarova has gone 10-7 on clay this year, with a strong 130-64 mark for her career. Masarova has not been at her best this season, going 16-16 overall, but does have a big serve when her game is clicking. The 24- year old follows that up with big forehands, trying to win the battle of court positioning and dictate play. The Spaniard's backhand is less sturdy and she isn't the best mover, though. In addition, Masarova's variety can be clunky.

In addition to injury concerns, Masarova has been inconsistent this season and this is a poor matchup for her. When these two played in Linz, Vondrousova dropped just two games.

Vondrousova's rally tolerance, ability to absorb pace and counterpunching make this tough for the less talented, but offensive-minded Spaniard.

Masarova should struggle to hit through the Czech, pressing and spraying unforced errors. Vondrousova's lefty forehand also goes into the weakest shot on the court, Masarova's backhand, which is a nightmare for the Spaniard. And Vondrousova's variety should keep the ball out of Masarova's strike zone, leading to even more errors.

Finally, Vondrousova's Elo rating is 270.6 points higher than Masarova's and her clay Elo is 122.7 points above the Spaniard's.

Pick: Under 19.5 games (-120 via BetMGM)

Beatriz Haddad Maia (-210) vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto (+160)

11 a.m. ET

Beatriz Haddad Maia last competed in the Strasbourg quarterfinals, falling 3-6, 0-6 to Liudmilla Samsonova. Haddad Maia won just 50% of her service points, getting broken five times. The Brazilian won 35% of her return points, failing to break.

Haddad Maia is a solid 7-5 on clay in 2024, with a strong 214-108 career-record on the dirt. Haddad Maia is a physical player, hitting with consistency and depth with her lefty forehand. While the 27-year old can ramp up the pace from either wing, she is more reliable with her forehand. The Brazilian understands point construction and is comfortable moving forward. But, Haddad Maia backhand can break down under pressure.

Elisabetta Cocciaretto made the quarterfinals of Rabat, but lost 5-7, 5-7 to Kamilla Rakhimova. Cocciaretto won 55% of her service points, getting broken on five occasions. In addition, the Italian won 39% of her return points, breaking three times.

Cocciaretto is 7-6 this year on the dirt, but does have an impressive 118-58 professional-record on clay. Cocciaretto hits consistent, heavy groundstrokes, spreading the court well. The Italian can hit with pace from her forehand wing and, during stretches, dictate play. However, the 23-yea -old's backhand can break and her game lacks power, allowing more powerful opponents to push her around.

Haddad Maia's loss to Samsonova was a typical, irrelevant "week-before-Slam" result.

The Brazilian should have plenty of success with her cross-court lefty forehand into Cocciaretto's weak backhad. And her backhand is more steady of the two and she should be able to fend off Cocciaretto's attacks on that wing.

Haddad Maia has more power than Cocciaretto, matching her consistency but also having the power to hit through Cocciaretto once she finds openings. And Haddad Maia is more comfortable coming to net, vital for finishing clay points.

Haddad Maia has the more complete game and there's nothing Cocciaretto does that should make her uncomfortable.

Pick: Haddad Maia -3.5 games (-120 via BetMGM)
