A man died and a woman was injured in a shooting outside a Maryland school on Friday night after a candlelight vigil for Minnesota Vikings cornerback Khyree Jackson and two of his high school teammates.

Jackson and his former Dr. Henry A. Wise Jr. High School teammates Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton Jr. died in a three-car accident on July 6 in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

On Friday night, a vigil was held for the three men at the high school. Capt. Sukhjit Batth, the acting commander for the Prince George’s County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit, briefed the press at the scene of the shooting.

“The candlelight vigil was very peaceful inside the school,” Batth said. “We had officers outside in the parking lot during the time of the candlelight vigil. At some point when the candlelight vigil concluded, everybody started leaving the school area and the parking lot, and the officers made sure that the majority of the people had already left the parking lot before they started heading out from here. And as the officers were driving down the street, they heard gunshots.

“They turned around. They came back. When they got here, within 30 seconds, they were flagged down by citizens who were performing life-saving measures on an adult female victim. Officers located another adult male victim, and with the help of our citizens on the scene, started performing life-saving measures. Both adult victims got transported to area hospitals. Unfortunately, our adult male victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.”

No arrests have been made in the shooting, but the Baltimore Sun reported a gun had been recovered.

The wreck that killed Jackson, Hazel and Lytton also remains under investigation, according to the most recent report from the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Jackson played in 21 games for Alabama during the 2021 and 2022 seasons before transferring to Oregon for the 2023 campaign.

The Oregon football program held a candelight vigil for Jackson on Wednesday night.

A fourth-round selection in the NFL Draft on April 27, the 24-year-old Jackson had signed his first pro contract and had been scheduled to report to his first NFL training camp on July 21.
