Nothing against the Queen of Salsa, but Celia Cruz wasn’t exactly the representation I had in mind as a young Afro Latina growing up in Brooklyn. Celia was a legend no doubt, but she was a legend that belonged to another generation — my grandparents’ generation. So when I watched TV or went to the movies, I often struggled to find someone who looked like me. You see, all of my cousins, despite having African American mothers, had Latino fathers who were of African descent: Puerto Rican, Dominican, Honduran, Panamanian — you name it, we had it. Mainstream media, on the other hand, most definitely did not. Looking back, this was one of the main reasons why I didn’t initially embrace being Latina. Sure, now we have a ton of words that describe the Black experience of Latinidad, but in the early 2000s, terms like “Afro-Latinx” didn’t really exist.
Recently, Allure Contributing Beauty Editor Jessica Chia and I co-hosted an OGX-sponsored panel with OGXperts Franchelli Rodriguez-Grullon (@chelliscurls) and celebrity hairstylist Jesus Guerrero (@jesushair) where we talked about the incomplete representation of Latinx hair texture in mainstream media. The first part of the discussion was dedicated to each panelist sharing how their Latinx heritage intersects with their personal hair journey. Unsurprisingly, there was a lot of overlap.
Franchelli, who is Dominican, has a hair story much like my own. Because of a lack of inclusivity, we found ourselves styling our hair in a way that allowed us to assimilate into an Americanized beauty standard. For Franchelli, it meant straightening her natural curls with a flatiron. For me, it meant frequenting a Dominican salon to relax my hair. Why? Because one of the things American society teaches young Black girls is that you have to wear your hair straight in order to have friends, find romantic love, and be successful. It’s only recently that we’ve made strides towards dismantling these beliefs by introducing laws that work to prevent natural hair discrimination in the workplace and in schools.
As a kid, I definitely drank the Kool-Aid. All I wanted was long, thick, flowing hair like my idols, R&B singers Aaliyah and Brandy. That Dominican hair salon my mom first took me to when I was 13 — I was there every other week. The myth is that once you start relaxing your hair, you have to keep doing it, so it doesn’t break off, making it not only a damaging process, but an expensive one.
I wasn’t ready for a change until I turned 20. However, going natural isn’t a forgiving process and the first recommended step, The Big Chop, isn’t for the faint of heart. So I decided to slowly transition into my natural curls in order to retain my length while repairing years of damage. In the beginning, OGX was one of the first brands I trusted to start this reparative process. It was affordable, which was very necessary considering how much product I needed to use on a daily basis. Looking back on my hair journey, I realize that my curls weren’t a burden, but a part of me and of my Afro-Latinx heritage. As long as I cared for them in the right way (sticking to an ingredient-focused hair care regimen, getting regular haircuts, and embracing protective styles), my hair could thrive, and in return I could be a part of the representation my community desperately needs.

De niña, mantuve esta noción. Solo quería un cabello largo y liso como mis ídolos, cantantes de R&B Aaliyah y Brandy. Así que fui cada dos semanas al salón para que me hicieran un relajador de cabello. La verdad es que una vez que comiences a alisar tu cabello con químicos, debes seguir haciéndolo. Si no se rompe. Es un proceso dañino y también caro.
Cuando cumplí los 20 años por fin estaba lista para un cambio. Lista para liberarme de las constantes visitas al salón de belleza. Sin embargo, yendo natural no es un proceso fácil y el paso recomendado, un corte de pelo drástico, no es para los débiles de corazón.No pude obligarme a hacerlo. En cambio, decidí intentar una transición lenta para mantener mi cabello largo.
