Cult Child Kindle Edition

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 670 ratings

This book is intended for those who want to understand the dissection, confusion and mindset of child growing up in a fundamental, evangelical cult.

Embark on a gripping memoir that delves into the profound depths of Sila Caprin's tumultuous journey. From the tender age of three, Sila finds herself ensnared within the clutches of an evangelical, end-times cult known as Sam Fife's Move of God. Within the towering walls of isolation, she is thrust into a realm detached from the outside world, confined to the two compounds that shape her existence.

Yet, amidst the suffocating grasp of this foreign and desolate environment, Sila's spirit burns bright, an unwavering flame that defies the darkness that seeks to consume her. Cult Child invites you into Sila's world, as she narrates her harrowing experiences through the prism of her own eyes and thoughts, offering an intimate and profound perspective of her arduous journey.

As Sila traverses the treacherous path towards adolescence, her determination ignites like a flickering ember, and she dares to dream of escape. Within the pages of this memoir, witness the intricacies of her plotting, the blossoming of her spirit, and the threads of hope interwoven amidst the tapestry of her existence. Yet, just as her plans take shape, a sudden incident shatters the fragile equilibrium, forever altering the course of her life.

With haunting prose and raw emotion, Cult Child unveils the heart-wrenching tale of resilience and transformation, painting a vivid portrait of a life irrevocably changed by the shadows of a clandestine world.

"Poignant, gripping and ultimately triumphant, Vennie Kocsis' "Cult Child" will leave you inspired by the pure strength of will that children use to cope themselves through trauma. Her fortress is no bigger than the space between her ears; but through quiet internal resistance, Sila halts her opponents and outlasts their ten year siege." Dolon Hickmon, author of "13:24".

I guess that I was lucky, I didn't meet 'the Move' until I was 17, a troubled teenager and moved into a body house in England (UK) at 18, before going to 'the Ridge' deliverance farm at Bowens Mill, under John Hinson. I spent more time there with my wife some years later, also visiting a family on the Alaskan Highway in British Colombia, Canada The elders were so dominant that the atmosphere of an individual place depended totally on them. I still cannot tolerate authoritarianism in Christianity and overreact to bullying of any kind, so I have had to leave all churches behind. I still suffer from depression and feel worthless.

Didn’t realise this was the first book of who knows how many so you’re left at the end not knowing what happens to the author and her siblings.

So thought provoking. I adored little Sila and her strength and courage, i really want to know what life at grandmas was like and what clothes she could wear and what things she ate and what shows she watched and what general freedoms she expressed after it all. Really really adored this book, im so so sorry for the horrific things you went through, you are the most amazing, courageous woman.

Vennie, I haven't understood whether this is your actual experience or someone you have written this with. Have the names been changed? Hopefully not the name of the vile people involved.
If I was involved in a cult I know my character would be recruiting, I could relate to what Esther was doing and I hated it.
Early on in the book you talk about the wet mouth feeling of nausea, by the end of this story I realised I understood all too clearly what you were talking about it.
I don't read literature like this anymore because I can't cope with it but having come across you on Fb I decided to go for it. I will have nightmares and flashbacks of a story I never lived. I can only say to whoever lived this: I have listened, I hear your words.
Enjoy a mind not occupied by god, what a load of bollocks, life destroying crap that is and always will be until we wake up.
Well done on writing this book, it can't have been easy, the mind is so fickle as it is, add traumatised memory loss and you are left to scrap together the pieces. I don't believe in leaving legacies but I understand why you have written this x

Reading Sila's story makes me simultaneously thankful I have so much less to unpack from my childhood, and deeply admiring of the resilience of Sila and her siblings. It also makes me furious that parents are so careless with their children that they drag them into these situations with a complete lack of forethought or protection. If you as an adult want to join one of these cults yourself then be that on your own head, but leave the children out of them! The patriarchy, hypocrisy, double standards, and child abuse of all kinds that runs rampant in the vast majority of these groups make them no place for children. It's bad enough for the adult women, usually.
An excellent story, and I'd be interested in reading a sequel.

Vennie shares her amazing story of surviving childabuse/childsexualabuse in Cult Child, which tells a story of a young girl and her siblings that were taken to a Christian camp, and it is there that the horrendous expereinces started. The message the author shares is undoubtedly genuine and comes from a deep place. As I read the book, I couldn't put it down! There was a very interesting connection as I kept reading and am happy I kept reading! :) I am very much looking forward to her sequel!! I would recommend Cult Child to anyone who has suffered child abuse, that is looking for hope in someone else's experience. I love how Vennie describes her story, her use of words can be quite captivating! In support of this amazing Author, who is also quite the talented Poetess & Artist (aside of an exceptionally beautiful soul), I am happy to announce that I am a very satisfied happy customer! lol :) THANK YOU Vennie for adding your depth, colour & hope to those who need to come forward with their own stories. **There is no shame is letting someone know. The onus remains on those who have caused the hurt, not on the victim.** SURVIVORS UNITE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Devastatingly sad

This book is a heartbreaking and devastating look into the significant psychological damage caused by childhood abuse. The author is incredibly able to make you feel as though you are right there and able to see the cult life as if you were experiencing it yourself. I await the sequel with an eagerness and hope for Sila that life after the cult held some relief from the torment and some moments of true happiness.

Sending you the biggest hug you can imagine. Your book is wonderful, you have given a voice to the children that have been raised in a cult by sharing your story. I related to your emotions and your fight to survive, I had tears streaming down my face as I read your experience. My mother joined "The Move" when I was eight, it was 1970, and we lived in Montreal at the time. I blame the move for my mother's death, as they told her that God would heal her when she developed breast cancer. The move tore my family apart, I was treated like the black sheep because I didn't want anything more to do with them after I turned eighteen. I could go on and on about my experiences, and the anger and sadness I still carry inside of me. I'm so glad you got away from them. I'm going to check out your web page, and I'm looking forward to when you release the sequel. Thank you for your courage.
