When I first bought this book in the eighties, it was banned from at least one London feminist bookshop. Given the climate of the time, I can only say that was a recommendation. Twenty years on, I still think it's one of the hottest erotic books on the planet, of any genre. Admittedly it does help if you're into bdsm, but she covers a fair range of topics. The best thing about it is that it is not only seriously imaginative, but it's actually really well written, unlike a lot of erotica. Buy, read and enjoy - just don't get the pages too sticky ;-)

Not for beginners, this book is not porn (heartless), and it's not erotica (fluffy). It combines the two and its protagonists are all either lesbians or gay men who are hard-core BDSM practitioners. Their emotions and fears are described vividly, and the book is full of penetrating insights into the human condition that go way beyond any sexual aspect. Some of the stories are very transgressive, so take them with a grain of salt.

Not for the faint-hearted or squeamish, this book is a hot, sexy compilation of kinky sexual fiction. I have read this book over and over and over and over and... I'm on my 3rd copy of this book. What appeals to me is delving into the shadow aspects of psyche, the intersections of pleasure and pain, consent and non-consent, fear and ecstasy. Not to be seen as a prescriptive text, but a wonderful source for sexual fantasy. Califia was writing way ahead of our culture's time.
