When anyone can be a traitor there's no one to trust

FBI Agent Peter Sutherland waits in the White House Situation Room. He monitors an emergency line for calls that might never come. Then the phone rings.

A terrified young woman says two people have been murdered and the killer might still be in the house with her. One of the victims gave her this phone number with urgent instructions: 'Tell them OSPREY was right. It's happening.'

The call thrusts Peter into the heart of a conspiracy years in the making. There's a Russian mole in the U.S. government and Peter must uncover who it is. The nation's at stake and innocent lives are in his hands.

*What's it about?*

Peter is a Night Agent. This means he sits by a phone in the White House waiting for it to ring every night. It's tedious until one night he receives a call from Rose. There's an intruder in her aunt and uncle's house. She's been given this number and a code and told to escape while she can.

What happens next pulls Peter & Rose into a web of conspiracy, lies and not knowing who to trust. Can they unravel the mystery? Can they stay alive long enough to do so? And who can they trust along the way?

*What did I think?*

This book is really well written. The suspense and intrigue is ratched up to 11. As the story gradually unfolds you realise what's happening and wonder how they're going to get out of mess they're in. I haven't seen the Netflix series, but my wife said it's excellent. I won't watch the programme now as it can only be a disappointment compared to the book. You really need to read this one!

For 80% of the novel, this was a nailed-on 5 star for me. It's a nail-biting spy thriller, convincing in its background detail and imbued throughout with pace and intrigue, and if there's more than a nod to 'Six Days of the Condor' which grabbed me by the throat over 40 years ago, it's none the weaker for that. The premise for the Soviet plot which drags Peter Sutherland into a race for his life is convincingly realistic, given what we know about recent events in the Ukraine and Russian interference in the US electoral process, and Matthew Quirk is an extremely talented plotter with the background to carry this all off . . . which he does so well.

So why no fifth star?

We're back to the old bugbear of the rush to sacrifice plausibility on the altar of a high-octane climax. We all know that the very nature of a thriller demands action, suspense, seemingly insuperable odds etc, and when reading thrillers of this sort we are more or less entering a contract that stipulates we will suspend disbelief as much as possible. I was brought up on tv westerns in which characters in a saloon fight would be smashed over the head with tables and chairs, then thrown through windows and would just shake their heads and carry on fighting. Six bullets in the chest might cause them to stagger for a while but wouldn't stop them firing the decisive shot. We've all been there and accepted it as part of the bargain. There has to be a point though where amazement dissolves into disbelief and tension seeps away like air from a leaky balloon and, for me, the final 90 or so pages of this novel were a disappointment.

I mean no disrespect to Matthew Quirk who is an amazing storyteller and a writer I'll almost certainly revisit. He has chosen to go down this route and is probably very happy with his decision as it is clearly selling massively and is absolutely crying out for TV and film deals. It's all a question of individual taste and while the vast majority of readers will love the mad chases and hair's breadth escapes from the clutches of the combined forces of the US security forces and Soviet hitmen and who knows who else, I'd have loved to see what a John Le Carre or Mick Herron would have done with the predicament in which the central characters find themselves.

I want to stay immersed in the events being described to me and, while I can cope with a few yanks on the chain which drag me out of the action, there is a fine dividing line between plausibility and fantasy. It's not exactly the author's fault I have this hang-up, but I doubt he'll lose much sleeep over that missing fifth star. He's going to get plenty of them. And, for what it's worth, I'm more than happy to recommend this novel. It will enthral far more often than disappoint.

Having watched the Netflix series, I wanted to delve a little deeper into the story and read the book.

Big mistake. The book was dull and I gave up half way through.

The script writers of the series did a brilliant job and I should have settled for their version

This is a great political crime thriller.
Peter works nights at The White House and his main job is to man the desk with a phone that will only ring if it’s a matter of national security.
One night it rings and he’s given the code words so follows instructions and lets his boss know.
The woman who calls was staying with her aunt and uncle and they were attacked and told her to run, but gave her the code words to say.
Peter is worried about Rose so goes to the crime scene but is turned away.
He meets her at the funeral and tells her to contact him if she needs help.
Peter isn’t meant to get involved as his role is simply to pass on the message from the phone, but in this case he gets in deeper and deeper until he’s in a whole heap of trouble.
There’s lots going on in this book and it’s certainly hard to know who to trust.
I really enjoyed this book as it reminded me of the tv show 24.
Thanks to Aria and Aries and NetGalley fir the opportunity to read this book.

Delving into "The Night Agent: A Novel" was like stepping into a labyrinth of suspense, where every turn presents a new mystery to unravel. Set against the backdrop of nighttime operations, the story masterfully blends the personal with the political, drawing readers into a whirlwind of intrigue and danger.

The character development is outstanding, giving depth and dimension to every player in this high-stakes game of espionage. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that no one can be trusted, and the lines between friend and foe blur beyond recognition.

The pacing is relentless, ensuring that readers are hooked from the first page to the last. The vivid descriptions and atmospheric settings add layers to the story, making it feel all the more immersive.

For those seeking a novel that combines heart-racing action with psychological depth, "The Night Agent" delivers in spades. It's a journey into the very heart of darkness, where secrets lurk in every shadow and trust is a luxury few can afford. An unforgettable read!

5.0 out of 5 stars For the ones that watched the show, and the ones that just want a well-written political thriller
Reviewed in Brazil on 9 April 2023
I decided to read the book after watching The Night Agent on Netflix. As my first experience with this author, I have to say it was quite a nice surprise. Political thrillers are not my thing, and I was weary about reading almost 500 pages about an already-known story. Thankfully, this book had a lot of twists and turns.
For the ones interested after watching the show, all you need to know is that you'll love Peter and Rose just the same, and there's a different conspiracy, with a few known plots and scenes, that is much darker than the series. It's worth the read, and you'll be surprised by where the story leads to.
Now, for all the political thriller fans out there, or book lovers that wanna read something different, The Night Agent promises and delivers a fast-paced mystery in the heart of Washington DC and the government, where no one can be trusted, and there's an entire country being held by duct tape and secrets ready to explode into an international crisis - or worse, a war.
You'll get to know well the main character, Peter Sutherland, who is a joy to read. His good morals and values - the typical American golden boy, are threatening to crumble and make him a grey man, his father's son. And, in the midst of all this, there's a sweet and intense romance between him and Rose. By the way, I'm glad to follow a female character who's not a damsel in distress, which is uncommon in this literary genre.
Kudos to the author, he deserves all the praise.
