From award-winning journalist Beth Ashley comes a groundbreaking investigation into the history of slutshaming, how it continues to affect us today and what we can do to fight it.

Whore. Hoe. Jezebel. Harlot. Slut. Five words. One meaning.

But what exactly is a slut? How has the concept changed over time? And why is slutshaming so dangerous?

In this groundbreaking investigation, Beth Ashley reveals the truth about slutshaming, gives us the tools to fight it, and encourages us all to have better conversations about sex.

The fight starts now.

"Beth Ashley takes a fascinating deep dive into the history of slutshaming. Along the way she challenges taboos and misconceptions and reframes the patriarchal narrative to explore how we can celebrate positive attitudes to sex" - Service 95, Dua Lipa's Book Club

I’ve been a freelance journalist, editor and researcher for eight years, specialising in sex, relationships and a little bit of social class.

In May 2024, my debut book, Sluts: The Truth About Slutshaming & How to Solve It will be published by Penguin - an investigation into the origins of slutshaming, how its managed to stick around for so long, the effects slutshaming has on marginalised communities and how we can fight back.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
This book tackles the ways that society affects men's and women's views of sex, and the way that that can be oppressive to women.

It's a large hardback that might look intimidating at first, but the author has a style that's really easy to read, helped by short paragraphs. Everything is well thought out and well researched with studies cited and references at the end. I would have liked to see an index too though!

Not every subject is covered in depth but this is a really good overview. The author does argue for the reclamation of the word "slut" which I'm not very keen on, but she acknowledges that that won't be for everyone.

Overall a very useful, sex-positive read.

This book tackles such a complex and fraught topic with elegance, joviality and hope. For how ancient a practice slutshaming is, there remains precious little about it, its effects and the scars it leaves. This book seeks to address that.

The author combines lived experience with research and delivers a masterpiece, a seminal work in the fight against misogyny. I cannot recommend it enough.

This book is for everyone

Vine Customer Review of Free Product( What's this? )
I feel like there are a lot of journalists, streamers and podcasters who need to read this before reporting on influencer and pop culture events. Anyone who uses Reddit and Tiktok as their primary news source could do with a flick through.

Brought a lot of nuance to the conversation, with actionable tips. As someone who's concerned about the popularity of snark pages and gossip sites often to the detriment of women by women in a time in society where we need to unite more than ever this is another resource to spark conversation and address our own internalised biases. Haven't finished yet, may increase or decrease once complete.
