Why look back when you can look forward? Why look in when you can look out? Where's the next evolution? I throw everything into my work, but once it's done, I'm really more concerned with what's new. The future is my thing.

Edward Enninful has lived an extraordinary life.

Here, for the first time, he shares the inspiring story of his journey, beginning in a childhood bedroom in Ghana overlooking firing squads, to arriving in 1990s London as an asylum seeker, to today setting the cultural agenda as the first Black editor-in-chief of British
Vogue. His covers have changed our understanding of beauty and desirability. Featuring exclusively African models, first responders, global activists and the oldest cover star at age 85, they have also broken sales records.

This is the story of how he did it.

A Visible Man is the story of a husband, son, brother, friend - and icon. Taking us from the neon thrills of Soho clubs to nights spent on friends' sofas, this is the story of Edward's phenomenal grit and determination: through fame and failures, joy and loss, ill health and addiction, heartbreak and coming out. It's the story of one man's revolutionary mission to change how we see the world, showing how unwavering passion and perseverance can allow anyone to make their mark.

Irish Examiner

I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who is studying or has an interest in fashion. Even if you don't, there is something universally appealing about Edward's book for everyone. He was born and raised in Ghana and came to London, England and within a few years he found his stride. Even from the way he writes, there is something endearing about Edward's personality. He doesn't talk down to his readers like a lot of famous people who have written biographies. He still seems humble despite all his achievements and who he knows. I actually really like the guy and didn't even realise I've been following his career without really even being conscious of it (the Black Vogue Italia edition in 2008, the shoot he did with Rihanna, Iman and Naomi, his first UK Vogue cover as Editor and the Meghan Markle guest Editor). He's a talented man and deserves where he is. He understands fashion, what ticks and how to move things forward. Thanks to his vision, British Vogue is now inclusive. I've bought more editions of Vogue since he's been editor than I did previously. I really hope to meet you Edward Enniful and work with you one day on a UK Vogue cover or guest editor edition.

I enjoy memoirs and especially fashion memoirs, but this is a lot more. Enninful is a skilful and effective writer - which can't be said for all fashion people - and he sets out to convey the particular experience of Black people in the industry, and in UK and US society more generally. He's generous, and tactical. For instance, he accepts the turnaround when someone shifts from snubbing him to pouring praise ('I love your work!) after she finds out who he is. But he describes the cost of holding in emotions, always being careful, working exceptionally hard, never exposing weakness when he's in the all-too-common situation of being the only Black person. The one time he seems to have expressed his feelings freely was when a security guard tried to stop him entering the Vogue offices: 'I'm the f***ing editor!'. I strongly recommend this book for anyone concerned about race issues. They might also enjoy the insights into the fashion world.

A great warts & all tell-all.
To be truthful, I did not know Edward Enninful before reading this book. So, I am blown away by the life that he has portrayed. He is History, played right before my eyes which were largely closed to it.
Edward has let us in to all areas of his life. Perhaps partially as an act of generosity to the reader (you never know what may inspire whom).
Reading this reawakens one's closed mind to the power of life's magic. Edward's is a life where the finger of fate landed on a soul that rose to the occasion (or should I say 'to the appointment).
Read this book if you want to unlock life. Read this book if you desire inspiration. Read it if you need hope.

I admired what Edward Enninful had done at Vogue, but I had no idea what he’s been through in his life. He was a political asylum seeker to England (which is why he loves England so much), he was very sick as a child, his father kicked him out of the house when he was 16, he was an alcoholic, and he’s had to have surgeries on his eyes to stop him going blind… and he never feels sorry for himself, only grateful and lucky for where he’s found himself. He’s made Vogue so much cooler and more successful by championing different kinds of beauty (older people, key workers, activists). And he’s apparently one of the kindest and most modest people in a notoriously vicious industry. I find him in this book incredibly and inspiring - and on top of everything, he’s not boring! Bravo, I loved it.

What a guy, hearing of his struggles growing up & then in the fashion world, what this man has done with Vogue is amazing, he’s brought it right up to date.
Vogues covers now sure take some beating, & so pleased to finally see prominent black models & role models on the covers.

This memoir teaches us about the importance of celebrating our milestones. You learn that success takes time. Edward did not become an overnight success, he started a career in fashion at 18 years old. Slowly but surely he got to the top, not without setbacks and adversity. Young people looking to branch out as entrepreneurs and build their own business need to read this book so they avoid mistakes that might ruin their dream

The book is excellent and my partner (whose gift this is) loves it. The only down side is that the cover was stuck to the packaging and has card and tape on the cover, which we are unable to remove without further damage. Doesn’t detract from the subject matter!

This book is about a work I know nothing about. Reading this book has given me some insight, the journey this author has been on should inspire any reader to follow their dream and not be deterred by anyone or anything. This is a great read.
