Adulthood is a Myth: A Sarah's Scribbles Collection (Volume 1) Paperback – March 8, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
These casually drawn, perfectly on-point comics by the hugely popular young artist Sarah Andersen are for the rest of us. They document the wasting of entire beautiful weekends on the internet, the unbearable agony of holding hands on the street with a gorgeous guy, and dreaming all day of getting home and back into pajamas. In other words, the horrors and awkwardnesses of young modern life. Oh and they are totally not autobiographical. At all.
Adulthood Is a Myth presents many fan favorites plus dozens of all-new comics exclusive to this book. Sarah's frankness on personal issues like body image, self-consciousness, introversion, relationships, and the frequency of bra-washing makes her comics highly relatable and deeply hilarious, showcasing how she became one of the most influential voices in web cartoonists.

Through her cartoons, Andersen is honest about her feelings about herself, about school, about her boyfriend, and about snacks. She is willing to talk about her embarrassments and her life choices and how she is worried about her future. She also spends a lot of time thinking of herself as an old woman, looking back over her life and guessing at what she’d say about them when she’s in her 80s.
She talks about the real things that come with being an adult—paying bills and setting alarms to wake up early and dealing with tampons and having to go to work. To her, graduation feels like jumping out of a plane with an unreliable parachute. Running into someone from high school is a trap. Being friends with other artists is both a blessing, as they can help make your work better, and a curse, as you want them to break their fingers so they can’t create better art than you.
Adulting is complicated, and maybe not even all that real, but it does feel endless some of the time. More laundry, more bills, more paperwork, more people. Sometimes you just need a break from adulting, and that’s the perfect time to reach for a Sarah’s Scribbles book and hide in your book fort for a while.
I loved Adulthood Is a Myth. Today was a challenging day, in a challenging week, during a challenging season at work, and I just needed a break tonight. I needed to feel like I was seen and celebrated for being human and tired and vulnerable and messy. I thought I’d be able to turn to Sarah’s Scribbles to get the understanding I wanted, and she did not disappoint. This book was a much-needed break for me, a calorie-free dessert at the end of a long tasteless meal. The more I read of Sarah’s Scribbles, the more I like her, and the more I want to keep reading.
The category Contemporary Women Graphic Novels is already one of my preferred genres to peruse for new reads, but I had no idea this book existed two days ago. Finding out about Sarah Andersen and her drawings was totally a fluke. I saw someone shared one of her drawings on Facebook. It was about books, so naturally the first thing I did was share it to my own author page. After that, I had to find out more about the artist, so a few clicks later I was getting my own copy of the book. And like many of the other reviewers of this book, once I started reading it, I stared wide-eyed at my computer screen, screamed “OH MY GOD SOMEONE GETS ME!!”
Andersen's drawings are cute and quirky, but they do get the humor and the occasional complete nonsense that is a socially anxious bookworm with a heart of gold. Had I not needed to walk away from my computer to do the adult thing for awhile, I would have devoured this book in no time. In fact, I almost wish I could have not discovered this artist until she had published four or five books so that I could have had a delightful weekend binge. Anyway... it's an awesome series of comics that sort of just gets life.
The content is down-to-earth but in a humorous way. Andersen bases her comics on the awkward but true things in some of our lives. The art itself is simple but cute, and some of the facial expressions have me cracking up. "Sarah" is so relatable that it isn't even funny.
I spent my night reading this, snickering, chuckling, laughing out loud, reading parts to my husband, and showing him parts that fit him to a tee. He seemed to enjoy what parts I showed him as well.
If you're a fan of irony and humor in real-life situations, chances are you'd probably enjoy Sarah's Scribbles. Check out the Facebook page and if it seems up your alley, I highly recommend getting this book. I've seen some of the pages in here online but others are new and the book itself is good quality. The red fuzzy material on the cover is a nice added touch.
Will be buying all future books!

I love the velvet touch on the front cover first of all, the touch of colour is a great contrast.
I originally saw some of the comics around Facebook so am aware of the author and had this recommened for me. The book itselfs tells the truth about adulthood, about how most of us don't have it together. True introverts will relate to this entirely, I know I do!
Great laughs with this book and not too expensive either. A great read and am definitely considering buying other works from Sarah based on this book alone. The art style is adorable and I really enjoyed this product.
