About the Author

Michael Kimmage is Professor of History at the Catholic University of America and a Non-resident Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. From 2014 to 2016, he served on the Secretary's Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State, where he handled the Ukraine/Russia portfolio. He is the author of The Conservative Turn: Lionel Trilling, Whittaker Chambers, and the Lessons of Anti-Communism and The Abandonment of the West: The History of an Idea in American Foreign Policy. He writes regularly for Foreign Affairs, the New Republic, and other publications.

Michael Kimmage sets out to demonstrate that the Ukraine War embodies three intertwined "collisions" - hence the title -- between Russia and Ukraine, Russia and Europe, and Russia and America. That is a fascinating and, to my mind, proper perspective. Unfortunately, the book does not really deliver. I was hoping to assign it to my university class on the Ukraine conflict this fall, but it simply has too many flaws. Kimmage tries to cover far too much ground -- beginning in 2008 up to the present -- ranging widely, and losing focus. He spends much time on tangential material and does not do justice to the core elements of the Ukraine conflict. Kimmage is evidently writing for the general reader -- indeed, much of the book seems like a stream of consciousness recollection of news headlines that stuck in the author's mind -- and introduces his personal political views without even the slightest attempt to buttress them with facts or substantive arguments. Unfortunately, Kimmage also makes some fairly basic factual errors, which he sprinkles throughout the book, often by trying to force complex matters into the simple constructs he seems to prefer. I remain convinced that the three collisions were an inspired framework for analysis of the Ukraine conflict, but this book fell way short of my expectations.
