An essential history of the influential men who have spearheaded the movement to erode the wall separating church and state.Beginning as far-left radicals during the 1960s, the theocons in Damon Linker’s book (including Richard John Neuhaus, Michael Novak, and George Weigel) gradually transitioned to conservatism when they grew frustrated with the failures of the decade’s revolutionary goals. Linker shows how, starting during the Reagan administration, they worked to forge a Christian alliance between Evangelical Protestants and Conservative Catholics. By injecting the language of faith into political life, this movement appealed to a wide swath of voters and ultimately played a central role in the election of George W. Bush. The Theocons is an absorbing and revelatory look at an ideological crusade that every American needs to know about.

“For anybody who wants to understand the growing public role of American religion, [The Theocons] is a book to reckon with.”—The New York Times Book Review“Literate and reasonable. . . . One of the most enlightening critiques of the Religious Right to date.” —BooklistThe Theocons constitutes a major step toward reclaiming the liberal heritage that has made America great.”—Alan Wolfe, author of The Transformation of American Religion“Invaluable. . . . Alarming. . . . Devastating as a critique of the theocratic ambitions of those who now control the Republican Party.”—Andrew Sullivan

This book is really scary. Mr. Linker knows what he is talking about, though, because I have read similar things in many other books over the past few years. The U.S. is headed for a Theocratic/Plutocratic government with "Big Brother" watching us much too closely!

I chose this book with the intention of trying to understand the "other" side of the argument. As a Christian I wholeheartedly agree with his recounting of the history of the Christian involvement with the politics of the U.S..
Me, I try my best to stay OUT of politics as I see my service to God in an entirely different light. Governments by their very nature are very secular with an occasional appearance of looking liked the "good guys".
I find it my challenge to produce the "fruit of the spirit". will suffice to show me as a true patriot.
My patriotism is wrapped up in three requirements. 1. Pay my taxes. 2. Obey the laws of the land. 3. Pray for our leaders....at that includes President Obama.
And I might add in closing, my God is a God that seeks volunteers, not coerced people.

Well written and referenced. A great insight into the diabolical nature of the right-wing neocons and their agenda. If you are left of center you will applaud the book. If you are inclined to listen to the right-wing talk radio freaks, you probably won't like the book.

This book chronicles the takeover of our government by religion over the past few decades. Very informative and backs up the claims it makes.

It is not science, although it appears to be well researched. It is, instead, a warning against the rise of Theocons and one person in particular. Where it lacks is in showing that Theocons exist in government. The ideology exist, although evidence for that is speculative to subjective to qualitative. The author is not a scientist so I don't fault him for his lack of empirical methods.

While somewhat outdated, it is only so in the context of the situation having worsened in being demonstrative of America's continuing to slide ever more closely to a combined ultra right-wing Fascists theocracy / plutocracy oriented dictatorship.

Fortunately I was able to locate and read the exceptional newer follow-up (different author) book "Attack of the Theocrats" through our local library regional network...

A must read to see the clearly intentional phases of this process unfolding.

I would strongly suggest a number of well researched (in one case extremely so) books that demonstrate how far this strategy veers away from the intents of our Founding Fathers (and literally the beliefs of several).

These are books that are especially good in dealing with the input of the core Founding Fathers (and the backgrounds that influenced them).

An exceptional book in that regards would be "Nature's God" by Matthew Stewart (be forewarned, it is a book that needs strong focus to wade through and get its fullest measure). This +400 page book has (additionally) over 90 pages of reference notes.

Equally good books (that are somewhat easier reads) include "The Faith of Our Founding Fathers" by David Holmes, "Revolutionary Spirits" by Gary Kowalski (also especially good), "Moral Minority" by Brooke Allen, "That's Not What They Meant!" by Michael Austin, and from the then recognized best-selling publicist of the Revolution whose works impacted very significantly on the sway of the Colonies towards Independence and in staying the course, "Thomas Paine Complete Works" by Daryl Marks (or any of his direct writings such as "Common Sense").

Remember:

John 8:32

As Theocratic politicians and avid active fundamentalist supporters would likewise do well to recall (as many of their activities put them in heretical violation of their own Holy Scripture of the inerrant Word of God... in other words, a good read for every States Republican Party Select Committee!):

Romans 13:1-2

Romans 13:6

1 Peter 2:13-14

Matthew 22:20-22

For ignorance in this Age of Information is so offensive as to be an abomination!

The message is timely, necessary, and vital. It reminded me of Winston Churchill's bold and frequent efforts to warn the British Parliament about the danger posed by Adolph Hitler to the security and peace of Europe, including Britain, during the 1930's.

Churchill was viewed by right and left alike as a troublemaker, a war-monger, a lone voice crying in the wilderness. Consequently, he was marginalised, ignored, and shut out as a political fool.

Had Churchill been heeded it is possible that Hitler could have been stopped before he had built his war machine and settled on his imperialist quest for lebensraum, and formed his insane doctrines, persuaded others to stand by his side, and plunge the world into a war it did not want, could not afford, and that need not have happened - IF Churchill had been believed and Hitler's expansionist and dominatory schemes forestalled.

There is a real danger that theocons, neocons, and paleocons, will combine to steal America from Americans, and then refashion it into a right-wing Fasco-evangelical one party state in which essential freedoms will be removed from the lives of all dissenters.

Those with the loudest voices seldom have the best ideas, but it is a fact of American historical record that atypical minorities have driven laws that please no one but their supporters, even when they are not understood.

Linker should be heard, and his warnings heeded. Failure to learn the lessons of history is 90% the cause of repeating the same or similar disasters. Single issue politics is insanity, and before anyone protests that 'these things' could not happen in America, they should know that they already have happened, and are likely to get worse as fewer and fewer theo-pols rant away the freedoms that the US vaunts as a model for the rest of the world.

Whoso readeth, let him understand that a prepared man is a ready man, and the enemy is at the door.

If ye are prepared ye shall not fear.
