List of the depth of each target to Rashee Rice in chronological order

Below is a list, in chronological order, of all of Rashee Rice's targets during the regular season (16 games, he sat out the last game). The DOT/DOC column shows the yards downfield for each pass attempt. Negative numbers indicate throws behind the line of scrimmage. In the right hand column an 'R' stands for reception, an 'I' stands for incompletion. The list is intended to show how Rice was used during the season. Because these figures only give depth of target, they do not include any Yards After the Catch - I'm only interested here in what routes he was running.

I used a YouTube video and transcribed the results of each throw. Another person might show slightly different results but the figures below compare very closely to the aggregates shown on the ESPN website and the figures shown on Pro Football Reference.

In general:

77% of Rice's catches were 6 yards downfield or fewer, with 25 catches completed behind the line of scrimmage.

Of his last 30 receptions, 10 were caught 7 yards or greater downfield with 12 receptions completed behind the line of scrimmage. So he was used 7+ yards downfield a bit more late in the season - but not a lot more.

I will be very interested to see how they use Rice this year and whether it is substantially different from 2023. Marquise Brown's Average Depth of Target last year was 11.9 yards downfield on 101 targets compared with Rice's 4.8 yards on 102 targets. Will Rice continue to be targeted short or will the Chiefs stretch him downfield more?
