The Denver Nuggets have been among the most successful NBA franchises over the last half a decade, in part due to the arrival and dominance of guard Jamal Murray. Denver won the NBA Championship in the 2022-23 season.

Murray has blossomed into the second-best scoring option for Denver, which also has three-time MVP center Nikola Jokić helping lead the way. A former Kentucky Wildcats standout, Murray was the 7th pick in 2016.

Murray averaged 9.9 points per game during his first season, ending 5th in the Rookie of the Year voting. He then jumped to 16.7 points per game in his second season and was 8th in the Most Improve Player rankings.

Over the last five years, Murray has averaged north of 18 points per game in each and topped 20 points per game in the last three, shooting over 45% from the field in all three seasons.

Murray’s elite three-point shooting and terrific play in the pick-and-roll have made him one of the most consistent guards in the NBA. He averaged a career-best 6.5 assists per game last season.

Couple it all together, and Murray is absolutely deserving of a max-level extension, which The Athletic’s Shams Charania tweeted is likely to happen.

Murray already has north of $100,000,000 in career earnings, and this deal could make him one of the highest-paid guards in the NBA. For a team with the recent success of Denver, it is certainly worth investing to keep the core of the team around town.

Expect this deal to be finalized in the coming weeks.
