Jerry: Mets shaky bullpen has a diamond in the rough

The Mets have been one of the best teams in baseball over the last month, but the bullpen still leaves a lot to be desired, as a six-run 10th inning was almost spoiled on Monday night against the Nationals in Washington.

As the bullpen tries to bridge the gap between Edwin Diaz’s 10-game suspension, Jerry says he wants to see righty Dedniel Nunez as the team’s closer.

“I love this kid. He’s throwing 97, he’s got a sharp slider,” Jerry said. “He’s fun to watch.”

Nunez was charged with the blown save after allowing a run in 1.2 innings in Monday’s eventual win over the Nationals, but Jerry says the stuff is there, and given the other options, Nunez should be tasked with high-leverage outs moving forward.

“I’m comfortable with him,” Jerry said. “How many guys in the bullpen can you say you’re comfortable with?”
