Tennis: Becker advances in L.A. Open

Boris Becker, looking to regain his form before the U.S. Open begins Aug. 29, survived a second-round challenge to defeat Chuck Adams, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1, in the Los Angeles Open.

In other matches, No. 6 Jason Stoltenberg of Australia defeated Steve Bryan, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, and Karsten Braasch, the eighth seed from Germany, got by qualifier Steve Campbell, 6-4, 6-2.

* Goran Ivanisevic and Thomas Muster played up to their top seedings by swiftly dismissing their opponents to reach the quarterfinals of the EA Generali clay-court tournament in Kitzbuehel, Austria.

No. 1 Ivanisevic looked sharp in sweeping Spain’s Francisco Clavet, 6-2, 6-4, and No. 2 Muster whipped unseeded Juan-Albert Viloca of Spain, 6-3, 6-3.

* Top seed Sergi Bruguera of Spain beat Hungary’s Jozsef Krocsko, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Czech Open clay-court event in Prague.

Home favorite Karel Novacek of the Czech Republic outlasted Germany’s Marc Goellner, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2). Third seed Slava Dosedel of the Czech Republic beat qualifier Ola Kristiansson of Sweden, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, and No. 5 Alex Corretja of Spain eliminated Norway’s Christian Ruud, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4, 6-3.

* Arantxa Sanchez Vicario rallied past Marianne Werdel, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the quarterfinals of the Toshiba Classic in Carlsbad, Calif. Sanchez Vicario, No. 2 in the world, will face Germany’s Christina Singer in today’s quarterfinals. Singer advanced with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over No. 7 seed Sabine Appelmans of Belgium.

No. 3 seed Conchita Martinez beat No. 11 Ginger Helgeson, 6-4, 6-3, for a quarterfinal berth against No. 5 Jana Novotna, and No. 6 Julie Halard also advanced, beating Natalia Medvedeva, 6-2, 6-3, for a quarterfinal spot opposite top-ranked Steffi Graf.
