EAST COLUMBIA high school students were honored last month during “An Evening of Excellence” at Howard Community College. Outstanding Seniors Awards were presented to Hammond High’s Ralph Bodenner, Nathan Harris, Andy Hayford, Maria Mercurio, Genelle Niblack, Jeremy Nieporent, Brandy Peaker, Anna Pfeifer, Kimberly Stetson and Patricia Watson.
Oakland Mills honorees were: David Gray, Lauren Knott, Betsy Renner, John Sunderdick, Katie Vatalaro, Kevin Williams, Rachel Wisniewski, Seol Yang, Dan Fingerman and Steve Zimmerman.
Dan Fingerman also has been selected as 1996 Coca-Cola Scholars Program finalist. This month, he will be interviewed in Atlanta. He was one of 122,000 applicants and 1,828 national semifinalists. Fifty finalists will receive four-year $5,000 annual awards; remaining finalists will receive $1,000 per year.
Steve Zimmerman and Hammond High’s Brian Schulman have each received a $2,000 Research Fellowship at the National Institutes of Health Howard Hughes Medical Institute Summer Research Program in Bethesda. They will spend their summer doing medical research and attending seminars.
Hammond’s teachers have been recognized, too. Brooke Kuhl-McClelland was presented a “Teaching Excellence Award” at HCC’s Evening of Excellence. Her diversified dance classes at the high school teach coordination, folk dance history and self-confidence.
Oakland Mills’ Scholar-Athlete of the Year Brian Howard received a Regional Scholar-Athlete $1,500 scholarship from the National Football Association. Ken Hobet is his football coach. Brian also competes in both outdoor and indoor track with coach Sam Singleton.
Language volunteers
Twenty teens are participating in Community Assistance for International Residents. Working with the Foreign-born Information and Referral Network in Columbia, they volunteer three to four hours a week for 20 weeks to help elderly and homebound immigrants to learn English as a second language.
Oakland Mills tutors are: Amy Browne, Linda Kao, Solome Namanda and Towan Tokpa. Hammond’s volunteer is Cally Duncan.

Reach Out, Long Reach Village Community Center’s newsletter, will be delivered to village homes beginning this month with the help of Boy Scout Troop 613. Suggestions and information for the newsletter are welcomed. A phone number will be included with the April issue.

Free immunization
Parents will be happy to know that their children can get their required immunization shots free April 17 at Oakland Mills High School from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Students in kindergarten through fourth grade and sixth through 10th grades must have two measles vaccines and one mumps vaccine before September to be able to attend school.
Parents or guardians must accompany the children and bring medical records. Information is available at 313-7500.
