Asian celebration

The Asian Arts and Culture Center of Towson State University will kick off a monthlong Celebration of Asian Culture on Sunday with its Opening Festival. Entertainment will include performances of Chinese, Japanese, Cambodian and Indian dances with Korean drumming and calligraphy, Thai fruit carving and Filipino Tinikling (“bamboo dancing”).

There will also be demonstrations of Asian musical instruments, flower arranging, bonsai, Japanese doll making and Chinese paper cutting. Native craft and food vendors will also be on hand.

An exhibition of Asian art from Maryland collectors will be on display throughout the month of celebration.

The Opening Festival will be held in the Fine Arts Center at Osler and Cross Campus drives. Admission is $2; free for children under 12. Admission to the afternoon dance performance in the Fine Arts Concert Hall is $6 for adults; $4 for students and seniors. It’s a weekend of flowers as Johns Hopkins’ Homewood House and the Maryland State Fairgrounds spring into bloom.

The Historic Homewood House will welcome the season with “Homewood in Flower: A Country House Spring” from tonight through Sunday. Cut flowers will be arranged throughout the mansion, and visitors can enjoy guided tours.

The Rites of Spring Garden Show will bring together local landscape architects and designers at the Maryland State Fairgrounds 4-H building tomorrow through Sunday. An assortment of gardening accessories, furniture, plants, gifts and decorative items for the garden will be on display. Additional highlights are a llama petting area for children and a display of miniature dollhouses with gardens. Throughout the day, guest speakers will address horticultural topics.

Homewood House is on Johns Hopkins’ Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. Tours will be held 11 a.m.-3 p.m. today through Saturday, noon-3 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is $5. Call (410) 516-5589.

Rites of Spring show hours at the State Fairgrounds in Timonium are 10 a.m.-8 p.m tomorrow, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-4 p.m Sunday. Admission is $6. Proceeds benefit Union Memorial Hospital. Call (410) 554-2662.
