Rangers: Infielder Spike Owen, who signed a minor-league contract with Texas only 2 1/2 weeks ago, announced his retirement. A career .246 hitter in 13 major-league seasons with Seattle, Boston, Montreal, the New York Yankees and California, Owen called it quits after going 0-4 in two games with the Oklahoma City 89ers, Texas’ Triple-A affiliate. Owen, who will turn 35 later this month, played in 1,544 major-league games, two playoffs and the 1986 World Series, where he went 6-for-20 (.300) in the Red Sox’s loss to the Mets.

Tigers: Before yesterday’s 7-3 win over Seattle, 45 percent of Detroit’s hits were for extra bases.

Yankees: Kenny Rogers, who has bounced between the rotation and bullpen this spring, will make two starts in extended spring training in Florida before he makes his season debut, April 23 in Kansas City. Rogers, who signed a four-year $20 million contract in the off-season with the Yankees, has had his first start with his new team delayed twice by rain.
