An Annapolis man and a Crofton woman were seriously injured Tuesday when the man’s car crossed the center line of Defense Highway near the entrance to The Ridges and plowed into another car, county police said.

Richard Lewis Gorman, 73, of the 900 block of Schooner Circle was in critical condition yesterday at Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

Carol Jean Kosar-Meadows, 38, of the 2800 block of Bargate Court was in stable condition at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

Police said Mr. Gorman was traveling east and Ms. Meadows west when Mr. Gorman’s 1991 Buick LeSabre crossed the center line for no apparent reason and smashed into the left front of Ms. Meadows’ 1993 Toyota Camry.

The impact spun both cars about 90 degrees, and they came to rest on the shoulder of the westbound lane of Defense Highway, police said.

Police said speed and alcohol were not factors in the accident.
