While we were supportive of the decision to let Becky Carlson play JV baseball at Arundel High, we have to admit the situation may be getting out of hand.
“Wide World of Sports” and its TV cameras were in Gambrills this week to do a piece on Becky and Arundel baseball. It is scheduled to air 4 p.m. tomorrow on ABC.
Becky is the first girl to play baseball in Anne Arundel County, but not the first to play the mostly boys sport in the state. Several others have done so before her, so why is this such a big deal?
” ‘Wide World’ is doing something on the Coors Light Silver Bullets women’s pro baseball team and is working Becky into it,” said Arundel baseball coach and athletic director Bernie Walter. “I’ve never seen anything like this.”
Becky and her parents, Don and Evelyn, and Walter never expected this kind of attention when Becky went out for and made the Wildcats JV.
Wildcats twin bill
Arundel’s baseball and softball teams are playing rare doubleheaders today in order to make up games. The Wildcats baseball team will play host to South River at 3: 45 p.m. and Broadneck at 7 p.m. while the softball team will play South River at 3: 45 and Broadneck at 5: 45 p.m.
Basketball showdown
Broadneck’s first-team All-County center Jamaine Young and Annapolis second-team All-County point guard John Downs are playing in tomorrow’s Mid-State Roundball Classic at 7: 30 p.m. at Cumberland Valley High in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Young and Downs will play for a team of Maryland senior all-stars against an all-star team from Pennsylvania.
Severna Park’s All-Metro center Jennifer Holmes, first-team All-County forward Jen Mottar of Arundel, Meade’s second-team All-County center Shalisa Johnson, and third-team All-County guard Monique Jennings of Severn, will play in a girls all-star game at 3 p.m.
Miscellaneous
Severn grad and 1995 All-County guard Alhamisi Simms averaged 11.0 points a game, including 88.1 percent (74-for-84) from the line, for UMBC as a freshman this season and earned Big South All-Rookie team honors. Simms was Big South Rookie of the Week three times. . . . The Bernias, Lori and Jeff, had quite a day for Broadneck’s gymnastics teams that took first all-around in a county meet Wednesday. Lori had a 35.0 all-around best score to lead the Bruins’ girls team to a first-place finish with 129.3 team points, while Jeff led the boys to a second-place finish. . . . Severna Park’s Robin Lancaster placed seventh with an all-around score of 35.3 in a recent state meet for Level 6, 11-year-olds. Lancaster’s best showing was in the vault, in which she posted a score of 9.55 for second place.
Former All-County and All-Metro softball pitcher Kristin Spak of Chesapeake is rolling through her final season as the Canisius College ace. Spak was recently named to the East Carolina Lady Pirate Classic all-tournament team after going 5-1 in the tourney. Spak led the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in ERA (0.94) and wins (17) last spring. . . . Former Spalding standout center fielder Kara Thompson of Linthicum is off to a .365 start at the plate for the Western Maryland Green Terror after setting school records for runs (34), doubles (10), hits (43) and at-bats (94) as a freshman last year.
Severna Park’s sophomore right fielder, Meredith Everly didn’t xTC start playing softball until last year when she was cut from the cheerleading squad and made the varsity softball team.
