On the field: Brady Anderson’s home run in the second inning extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Anderson’s homer, his ninth of the year, leaves him in a tie for the league lead with Detroit first baseman Cecil Fielder. Going into yesterday’s game, Anderson was tied for third in the AL in runs scored, ranked second in total bases with 55 (Frank Thomas was first with 56), first in slugging percentage (.753) and second in extra-base hits (14), behind Seattle’s Edgar Martinez.
In the dugout: Jose Offerman was one of the Royals’ primary acquisitions during the off-season, a young player who would supposedly add to the nucleus of Kansas City’s young players. But 20 games into the season, manager Bob Boone has apparently decided he cannot win with the error-prone Offerman at shortstop: For the second straight game, Offerman started at first base for Kansas City.
In the clubhouse: “I was mad at everybody last night. My coaches, everybody. I’ve got a low boiling point.” — manager Davey Johnson, furious over the Orioles’ 9-8 loss to Cleveland on Tuesday night.
