Jockey Larry Reynolds Jr. scored the 2,000th victory of his career yesterday when he booted home Palliser Bay in the sixth race at Pimlico Race Course.
Reynolds had to survive an objection by Jeffrey Carle, the rider of third-place finisher Perfect Swap. The objection was disallowed by the stewards.
“I didn’t realize where he was,” Reynolds said of Carle, whose mount was pinned down on the rail behind the winner and inside of runner-up Dowhatisay. “I did come out a little bit, but I didn’t think it was enough.”
Reynolds, 26, scored his first win less than 10 years ago, June 20, 1986, in Great Falls, Mont. His father was also a jockey and “won probably 4,500 races, if you count all the ones at the bush tracks,” said Reynolds.
Special shaping up
Geri, Wekiva Springs and Key of Luck remain the top contenders still eligible for the Pimlico Special on May 11.
They will be trying to win the $600,000 race that Cigar dominated last year. Owner Allen Paulson has indicated that Geri, a stablemate of Cigar’s, will run instead of the big horse.
Geri and Wekiva Springs are rated second and fourth, respectively, behind Cigar as the nation’s top thoroughbreds.
Mist, Mz. Zill Bear win
On a day the chalk horses had their way, favorites Logan’s Mist and Mz. Zill Bear captured their divisions of the $30,000-added Searching Stakes.
Logan’s Mist, a 4-5 pick in the betting, came from just off the pace for a length victory over Rejoyced after a mile over the turf.
In her first start since Christmas eve, Mz. Zill Bear pulled away down the lane for a 4 1/2 -length triumph over pacesetter Frozen Lock in the second division. The winner went off at even money.
