THE THIRD-GRADE class of Penny Segessenman at Charles Carroll Elementary School in Silver Run was recognized recently as the winner of the annual Arbor Day Poster Contest sponsored by the Carroll County Forestry Board.
Each student in the class received a T-shirt with the winning poster reproduced on it.
“The poster they sent in was quite large,” said Donna Baker, a Carroll County Forestry Board representative. “It had a large picture of the Earth on it and our continent in the middle. All around the Earth were the words, ‘This is Arbor Day. Let’s plant a tree to keep the world green for you and me.’ “
Carroll County’s elementary schools are invited to participate each year in the contest, which is open to students in grades one through five. Each class is allowed to submit one poster. The poster can be a group effort or the work of an individual student.
Five schools — Charles Carroll, Robert Moton, Sandymount, Taneytown and William Winchester — sent in 26 entries this year.
First-, second- and third-place prizes were awarded at each grade level. Prizes included books and videos. Each class received a certificate of recognition.
“We used to put the winning poster on a billboard,” Mrs. Baker said. “Then, four or five years ago, we started doing the T-shirts.”
Beside the winning poster, the T-shirts contain the words “Mrs. Segessenman’s 3rd Grade Class” and “Carroll County Forestry Board.” The boxes that were in each corner of the poster have been reproduced on the back.
One box depicts a river with fish in it and trees and deer on the banks. It reads, “Trees provide shelter and homes for our animal friends and they help purify the water.”
The second box contains a picture of a town and reads, “Trees help make our cities beautiful and help to clean the air.”
The third box features a paper mill, a pond, a front-end loader and trucks stacked with logs. It reads, “Trees are our source of paper, processed at the mills.”
The final box shows Charles Carroll Elementary School with children planting trees. A flag waves in the breeze. It reads, “We plant trees at school to make it look nice and to beautify our surroundings.”
Mrs. Baker said the T-shirts are for sale at $12 each. Proceeds offset the cost of printing the shirts, she said. Anyone wishing to buy a T-shirt may call Mrs. Baker at 848-9290.
The Carroll County Forestry Board is a volunteer organization sponsored by the Forestry Service of the state Department of Natural Resources. The board promotes conservation management and wise use of forest resources and supports educational programs.
May Blast
Charles Carroll Elementary School will hold its annual May Blast from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
May Blast will feature carnival games, including a shooting gallery, five-pin bowling, fish pond, golf and bingo. There will be prizes, and a dunk tank will give students a chance to sink their favorite teacher. There will also be a cake walk.
Tickets for games will be 25 cents, or students may use the “chipmunk checks” they have earned throughout the year.
Nail painting and face painting also are part of the fun. Bunky the Bear and a clown with balloons will roam the grounds. You can top the day off with a hayride.
A raffle will feature prizes donated by local businesses, including gift certificates from Race Pace, Moto Photo, All Tune and Lube, Trendsetters Hair Salon, Foxes Pizza Den, the Hickory Stick, Fun Quarters, Kingsdene Nurseries and Dukes Car Wash.
Raffle tickets are $1 or six for $5. The drawing will be held between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
A silent auction of teacher-donated items will be held at 1 p.m. Food for sale will include hot dogs, chips, sodas, soft pretzels and baked goods.
