Most parents get nervous when their sixteen-year-old goes for the first solo drive in the family car. Bethany Arrington, a junior at Glenelg High School, is learning to fly airplanes.
One day in the next few weeks Bethany will take her first solo flight as part of the process to get her pilot’s license. Fortunately, both of her parents, C.T. and Anne, are very proud and excited. They have both have flown with Bethany and really enjoyed the experience.
About eight months ago friends of Bethany’s mom were talking about taking a Discovery Flight at Dream Flight School in Westminster. The pilot instructor does the flying, but allows the student to briefly take the controls. Anne thought Bethany would be interested.
Bethany got up in the air and realized that she loved it, and was determined to get her license. The Federal Aviation Administration requires that a pilot be 16 years old to fly solo and 17 years old to get a pilot’s license. Bethany hopes to get her license as soon as she turns 17. In the meantime she is driving the family car to Glenelg, where she will play basketball, and start to think about which college she wants to attend.
Bethany has learned to fly Cessna 172 airplanes, which seat four people. Her parents and a friend have all flown with her at different times. The one flight with her mom was particularly memorable because Bethany was learning to land the plane, and had to make multiple landings.
Her favorite part of flying is taking off, because “you have to go really fast to get the plane in the air.”
Keep going fast, Bethany, but make your parents happy by telling them that landings are also your favorite part of flying.
This is the time of year to stock up on books and other entertainment options for those long evenings in the winter. The 20th year for the Shepherd of the Glen Lutheran Church’s annual Media Sale promises to be another incredible event.
The sale dates are Thursday, Sept. 17, and Friday, Sept. 18, from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All day on Saturday you can purchase a large paper bag for $5 at the door, and fill it until it is ready to burst. Crowds of book lovers will be waiting at the church on Burntwoods Road on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. to make sure they get the first chance to check out the amazing selection of books.
Calvary Lutheran Church on Old Frederick Road wants to thank everyone who attended the Community Wide Picnic that was held in July. A great time was had by all, as members of the church thanked the community for supporting Calvary for the past 125 years.
The anniversary year celebration continues on Saturday, Sept. 26 with the church Fall Festival and Yard Sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Country Kitchen Table selling apple dumplings, jams and jellies, pies, cakes, cookies and apple cider is a customer favorite at the sale. Fresh produce, flowers and fall decorations will also be sold.
