To me, the importance of the papal visit to the United States — and its failure — was to confront a deeply held cultural myth in America: That the supreme goal of everyone is to become rich and that anybody who tries hard enough and long enough can do so.

That is why Donald Trump is the GOP presidential front-runner. The pope should have stated more clearly his belief that perhaps in the future, admiration should go not to the people who make more money but to those who work for the betterment of humanity, even if they never become rich.
