Century girls lacrosse coach Becky Groves played her high school lacrosse at Liberty, then took her skills to the Division I level at Towson University.
The Tigers are honoring Groves, one of their program’s all-time best players, by inducting her into their Athletics Hall of Fame. Groves is part of the Class of 2018, which will be honored Nov. 2 at an induction banquet.
Groves is one of Towson’s most decorated players. The attacker was the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year. She was honored as the 2005 and 2006 CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s lacrosse.
She was named first-team All-CAA in 2004 and 2005 and 2nd team in 2003. She was the 2005 Doc Minnegan Scholarship Award recipient, Towson’s Senior Female Athlete of the Year in 2006, the Tigers’ Female Rookie Athlete of the Year in 2003, and the TAF Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2006.
Groves led Towson in goals scored in 2003 (39) and 2004 (45), in assists in 2004 (19), 2005 (31), and 2006 (21), and in points in 2003 (48) and 2004 (64). She ranks fourth in career goals with 178, second in assists with 79, third in points with 257, and 10th in ground balls with 135.
She paced Towson to a 13-6 record in 2005 that included the Tigers’ first CAA championship and their first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. She was named a third team All-American by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.
Groves finished her high school career as Carroll County’s career scoring leader at the time with 249 goals and 130 assists.
Groves has been Century’s girls lacrosse or eight years, and led the Knights to state championships in 2012, 2015, and 2017.
Go West for softball
Sophomore infielder Emily Maseth (Westminster) helped West Chester University reach the Division II NCAA tournament this season. Maseth played in 58 games for the Rams, all starts, and batted .333 with five home runs and 30 RBIs.
Maseth added 14 doubles and a triple, and scored 27 runs for the Rams (45-15). They won the Atlantic Regional and posted a 5-2 postseason record.
Bellarmine has backbone in Hulsman
Freshman goalie John Hulsman (Westminster) made his mark playing Division II men’s lacrosse at Bellarmine University this spring. The Knights went 4-9, but Hulsman started nine games and put up some impressive numbers.
He collected 113 saves and posted a .589 save percentage. Hulsman went 3-6 in his nine starts, but earned a spot on the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Team of the Week for March 6 — Hulsman made 13 saves in a 7-6 win over Marquette two days earlier.
The rookie landed Southern Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week honors on April 17 after making 11 saves in a 12-6 victory over Mercer. Hulsman helped Bellarmine shut out the Bears in the second half of that game.
Hulsman earned a spot on the All-SoCon First Team after leading the conference in save percentage, saves per game (12.56), and goals-against average (8.69).
Life’s a beach at Stevenson
Stevenson University’s women’s beach volleyball team put together an 18-6 record this spring, its third year as a program, with a few former Carroll standouts on its roster.
Leading the way was senior Lauren Weaver (South Carroll), who played with Katie Leftridge and crafted a 17-7 record this year. Weaver finished her beach career with 35 victories, the most in Mustangs history.
Sophomore Victoria Prokic (Century) played with Julie Nightwine and posted a 20-4 mark. Freshman Sarah Riggin (Century) paired with Katie McGuire and the duo went 11-9.
Stevenson’s roster also included sophomore Caroline Dangel (Liberty).
