An Eldersburg man was charged with assault after he allegedly struck a woman in the face.

Steven Ferrara, 34, of the 1000 block of Berkley Drive, was charged with one count of second-degree assault. He is being held without bond following a Monday bail review, according to electronic court records.

According to the statement of probable cause, Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence Friday and spoke to a woman who said Ferrara had struck her in the face with a closed fist. Deputies observed bruising and swelling under her eye.

She said Ferrara had become worried that she would contact the police and had gone to another area and began striking himself in the face before calling police to report that he had been assaulted.

Deputies then spoke to Ferrara, who said the woman had struck him in the face. Deputies observed a bruise on the right side of his face and bruising to his knuckles. He told deputies that the woman had pinned his leg in a doorway, but no injury to his leg was observed.

A witness on-scene said they had observed Ferrara striking himself.

A court date is scheduled for Aug. 8.
