UPDATED:

Two Annapolis police officers rescued a group of ducklings Sunday that were trapped on State Circle.

The Annapolis Police Department said Officers Nancy Moore and Deborah Sauriol-Inoni responded to an alarm call Saturday and found six ducklings and a mother duck “in a dead space down multiple stairs.”

Three ducklings were dead and those who were alive were unable to get up the stairs, the department said.

Moore and Sauriol-Inoni found an empty cooler nearby and filled it up with water to put the living ducklings in.

The mother duck flew away and did not come back, police said, so the two took them to the local animal rescue clinic.

“During this time of year, ducklings can easily get trapped, fall down storm drains or encounter other hazards,” the department wrote in a release. “While police officers are not the duck police, we’re already ready to help!”

The rescue isn’t without precedent.

Annapolis Firefighters helped rescue a brace of baby ducks in May 2017 from a storm drain after they received a call from a passerby.
