College football’s postseason landscape could be changing once again as officials are reportedly looking at adding three new games by 2020.

The proposal put forth by the NCAA’s Competition Committee, would add three new bowl games for the 2020 season a source told Brett McMurphy. The move would increase the number of bowl games to 43 including the College Football Playoff national championship game.

The move is expected to be approved by the NCAA’s Football Oversight Committee on Tuesday.

The current bowl cycle is set to expire in 2020.

The NCAA approved a three-year moratorium on new bowl games back in 2016 after there were not enough eligible teams to fill the 41 bowl games. There are currently 40 bowl games including the title game.

According to the report, Chicago and Myrtle Beach, S.C. are ‘near locks’ for hosting two of the three new bowl games with Arizona State as the possible third location with Charleston, S.C., and Greenville, N.C., as other sites expressing interest.

The Oversight Committee is also expected to set the maximum number of approved tie-ins for each Football Bowl Subdivision conference. Here is the breakdown according to McMurphy:

ACC 10 (not including ACC’s Orange Bowl bid)

SEC 10 (not including SEC’s Sugar Bowl bid)

Big Ten 8 (not including Big Ten’s Rose Bowl bid)

Pac-12 7 (not including Pac-12’s Rose Bowl bid)

Big 12 6 (not including Big 12’s Sugar Bowl bid)

American 7

Conference USA 7

Mid-American 6

Mountain West 6

Sun Belt 5

Army and BYU would continue with their own automatic bowl tie-ins while independents like UMass, New Mexico State and Liberty would have to hope for an at-large spot to open up when a conference fails to have enough eligible teams to fill its required spots.
